Zane was terrified. He instantly caught her in his arms. The woman he had yearned for all these years had just collapsed into his embrace without any warning.
"You need what?"
"Elara?!"
"Wake up!"
Zane kept his voice low, gently tapping her cheek, but she was completely unresponsive.
Fearing she was in serious danger, Zane swept her up into his arms. He was about to sprint toward the exit when he abruptly stopped dead in his tracks.
The grounds were swarming with guests. If he ran out carrying her like this, God only knew what kind of vicious rumors those bored, wealthy socialites would spin.
He didn't care about his own reputation, but he cared deeply about hers.
Freeing one hand, he immediately dialed Jasper.
The moment Jasper walked through the archway, he saw Zane holding... Mrs. Sterling?
"Boss, I know they say stolen fruit is the sweetest, but are you really making a move on Mrs. Sterling?"
"Shut up and check her bag for medication!"
Jasper blinked, quickly scooping up the designer handbag from the ground. He didn't find any pills, but he did pull out several sugar cubes.
Zane looked at the sugar cubes in Jasper’s hand, hesitating.
Jasper raised an eyebrow. "The only other things in here are makeup, tissues, and a phone. Which one do you think is going to save her life?"
Even people who loved sweets didn't carry plain, flavorless sugar cubes like this.
"Unwrap it, hurry!" Zane snapped, his anxiety spiking.
Not caring about the dirt on the stone steps, Zane sat down, keeping Elara securely in his arms.
Jasper swiftly peeled the paper off the cube. Zane grabbed it and pressed it to Elara’s lips.
But the woman in his arms was unconscious, her jaw locked shut.
Jasper aggressively pinched Elara’s jaw to force it open.
"Be gentle!" Zane barked, quickly slipping the sugar cube into her mouth.
Jasper watched the whole thing. "Boss, I honestly think Mrs. Sterling needs mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."
"Stop talking and go find me a glass of sugar water!"
Jasper bolted to find the water.
Terrified that the sugar cube might slip down and choke her, Zane carefully elevated Elara’s head, shifting her into a semi-seated position against his chest.
Thankfully, she regained a fragile sliver of consciousness, struggling to hold the sugar in her mouth.
