Unable to bear the stifling tension, Elara pushed the door slightly to widen the cramped space.
"Mr... Mr. Whitaker, I should get going." Without waiting for a response, she rushed toward the exit. Selling her body wasn't as easy as she had thought; it required an incredibly thick skin that she clearly didn't possess.
"Ms. Vance!" Zane hurried after her and caught her arm, but misjudging his strength, he accidentally pulled her flush against his chest.
Elara's eyes widened in sheer shock, staring at him in disbelief.
Zane froze, too. He hadn't meant to be this direct.
Remembering that his ex-wife might spend the night, Elara frantically pushed him away.
"Mr... Mr. Whitaker, it's... it's too late. I'm going home..."
"My ex-wife just left. Don't run into her downstairs."
Huh?
Elara blinked. They barely knew each other. Everything had been completely innocent. She had only entertained some fleeting thoughts and hadn't actually done anything. Had he seen right through her?
"Why... why should I be afraid?" she asked cautiously.
"My ex-wife is incredibly domineering—"
Ding-dong! Ding-dong!
The doorbell shattered the silence. The two of them, still standing inches apart, jumped in fright. Without another word, Elara sprinted back into the study.
Zane let out a heavy sigh, mentally cursing his own pathetic luck!
He wrenched the front door open violently. "What?!"
"Watch your tone!" Jocelyn shoved him aside. "Did I interrupt something in progress?"
Back when they were married, their sex life had been a disaster. Jocelyn frequently accused him of either sleeping around or handling things himself.
Zane stayed silent, as usual, and Jocelyn rarely waited for an answer anyway.
She walked to the entryway console and grabbed the car keys she had left behind.
Wait!
She whipped her head back around.
There was a woman's handbag on the console!
And it wasn't new.
Jocelyn raised an eyebrow. "Whose bag is this?"
