That evening, the moment Julian stepped through the front doors, Elara abandoned all pretense of high-society decorum. She stormed down the sweeping staircase, intercepting him in the grand living room right in front of his parents.
"I don't care about you, and I don't care about the Sterling family's reputation!" she shouted, her voice trembling with rage. "You are going to give my sister the justice she deserves!"
Elara and Julian had always been the golden couple. Her adoration for him had been the stuff of legends; she had never raised her voice to him in seven years. Watching her erupt like this left Nathaniel and Sienna completely stunned in their armchairs.
Furious that she was airing dirty laundry in the main living room, Julian shot her a lethal glare. "What the hell is wrong with you?! Go upstairs!"
Go upstairs?
So he could sweep it under the rug? So her sister's trauma could be erased for the sake of his convenience?
Elara had never been a weak woman. She had only made herself small because she loved him.
"I'm saying it right here!" she screamed back.
"I want your parents to hear exactly what kind of degenerate trash your aunt raised!"
"Are there no laws in this city?!"
"Vivian is the daughter of the Vance family!"
"Julian!"
"Where is your conscience?!"
"She is your family!"
Alarmed by the sheer ferocity of her outburst, Sienna quickly stood up. She knew exactly what kind of sleazebag her nephew Cameron was. "Elara, sweetheart, what is going on?"
"Mom! Cameron tried to sexually assault Vivian!"
"And Julian won't even let me ask a single question about it!"
Nathaniel's brow furrowed into a deep, authoritative scowl. "What is the meaning of this? Julian, explain."
Julian turned to Elara, his eyes narrowing into a look of such absolute, bone-chilling disgust that it completely shattered what was left of her heart.
There wasn't a trace of the boy who had loved her.
All that remained was a man staring at a repulsive burden.
He had become a complete stranger.
