Chapter 34: Pretend

Deidra’s P.O.V.

After ending the call with Deb, I made my way to Jinx. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders, asking if I was ready to go, like it was normal. Like we do this every day. And I pretended like it was. I pretended like walking with Jinx’s arm around me was my actual life, like it was an everyday thing, like I belonged there.

I tried to forget about what Deb had told me on the phone. I just couldn’t. I couldn’t think about what she said, along with everything else I knew and how Jinx had been treating me all day, and not spiral. For once, I didn’t want to worry. I didn’t want to overthink about it. I didn’t want to dwell

or ask questions. I simply wanted to exist in the moment.

Because Deb had a point. What risk did I want to take? I still wasn’t sure, but I knew that I wanted to have a good vacation. I had the perfect excuse to pretend that we were a couple. The perfect excuse to fall for the lies we created. The perfect out when it comes time. No matter how much it

might hurt by then, at least I wouldn’t have to look like a fool. Jinx and I would split and things

would go back to normal.

There might have been a time when Jinx had a crush on me, but that was years ago. If it’s even

true. Maybe he just wanted to be my friend, but didn’t know how to be. Regardless, things are not

the same. I don’t have the same confidence Deb seemed to have that Jinx has feelings for me.

So, I’ll just pretend that mine aren’t real.

“Oh my god, Mrs. Roth, you are such an amazing cook,” I said as I scarfed down the last bite of the fresh apple crisp she made for us.

“Deidra, darling, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Claire?” she scolded me playfully.

“Cut her a break Mom,” Jinx jumped in, throwing me a wink. “She’s still getting used to it.”

I blushed. I hated that just a stupid wink and a few words made me blush. I hated even more that Jinx noticed and liked it. Although, I’m starting to wonder if this is really hate that I feel.

“Sorry, I’ll get better eventually,” I said with a forced smile.

“Oh, Deidra, dear, I wanted to ask you what your favorite Christmas dinner dish is,” Claire said. “I’d like to make it for us on Christmas day if I’m not already.”

I blinked at her for a moment.

“Oh, uhm, y–you don’t have to do that,” I said awkwardly. “Really, I’ve crashed your guys‘ vacation

“Nonsense!” Claire replied. “I want you to come. We all do. It’ll be fun, and I’m making a huge meal.”

“Uhm, w–well, l-”

“If you think for a second that I’m letting you spend Christmas alone in that little cabin, you have another thing comin‘, Thorn,” Jinx cut me off, whispering those words in my ear, his voice a mix of

gentle and dangerous.

I swallowed hard as he pulled back, giving me a stern look. I wanted to argue. Oh, boy, did I want to fu.cking tell him to f***k right off out of pure spite. But… I was afraid. Not of embarrassing him in front of his family. I was afraid that he’d threaten to bend me over his knee or something.

“I can handle being alone just fine, Brixton,” I bit out my voice coming out annoyed.

Yeah, so much for fu.cking keeping my mouth shut. The words just slipped out. The more my brain

spiraled, the more curious I got…

“I’m not arguing with you about this,” he stated. Stated. Like that was that. “You’re comin‘. You’re gonna spend the whole day with us. And if you keep acting up, you’ll have to stay the night on

Christmas Eve just so I make sure you don’t go running away on us.”

I scoffed despite the heat that pooled in my lower belly.

“You’re not the boss of me,” I said, sounding like a child as I crossed my arms.

“You’re being naughty, Snowdrop,” he said causally. Santa doesn’t like naughty kids.”

That earned a few snickers around the table, but I glared at the man.

“I’m not a child Jinx,” I said, putting emphasis on his name. “You can’t make me do sh.it.”

Jinx’s eyes hardened when I used his road–name. He went quiet for a moment, just staring at me. I

gulped, but refused to look away. Then, suddenly, he stood up and grabbed my hand, pulling me to my feet.

“Can y’all tell Way to get his pjs on? I’ll be there to tuck him into bed in a second,” he asked the

table.

“Uh, yeah, sure,” Birdie replied.

The words barely left her mouth before Jinx started pulling me away. He practically dragged me through the kitchen and down the hall. When we got to his bedroom, he literally threw me inside. I stumbled a few steps before turning to glare at hin. My mouth was open and ready to start

spouting off, but that died quickly when I realized how close Jinx was.

Before I could take a step back, one hand snaked around my back and the other grabbed my chin.

Jinx’s thumb rubbed along my bottom lip, pulling it down and letting it go a few times. His eyes

flickered between mine and my mouth. My hand moved to his chest, ready to push him away, but all I did was grab on tight.

“You and this goddamn mouth of yours,” he murmured, pushing his thumb past my lips. “Don’t you know what it does to me when you talk back like that?”

I wasn’t sure what he meant, but my body reacted to the heat behind his words. My tongue flicked across the pad of his thumb. Jinx’s eyes blazed as he pushed his whole thumb into my mouth. I closed my lips around him. He pressed down on my tongue and I did my best to wrap it around his

thumb.

Suddenly, Jinx ripped his thumb from my mouth. I had to slurp the extra saliva he dragged out with him. And wipe my mouth since he trailed my saliva but when he pulled back. He could have warned me.

“Wait here,” he said. “I mean it, don’t fu.cking move. We’re going to talk about tomorrow.”

I sighed and gestured for him to go put Waylen to bed. After he was gone with the door shut, I plopped down on his bed. I tried not to get too comfortable. Or to snoop. I was trying to calm my racing heart. I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I liked pushing Jinx’s buttons and that I had every intention of spending Christmas day with them if they really wanted me there.

Only a few minutes later, the door opened back up. Jinx stepped inside, shut the door, and leaned against it. His eyes were on me, and he let out a breath like he was relieved I was actually still here.

“Did you really think I would run out on you while you put your son to bed?” I asked him.

Jinx gave me a bashful smile as he pushed off his door. I didn’t move, and he joined me on the bed. He sat close despite having a lot of room. Our knees were touching. His heat was seeping into my clothes, warming my skin.

“Now, where were we?” he asked as he leaned closer to me.

I didn’t back away. That made him smirk as he leaned in even closer. Our lips were almost

touching. Just a teeny bit more. My breath hitched as I waited in anticipation.

“Can I kiss you?” he asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

“You’re asking me now?” I replied, feeling breathless.

“You kissed me the other times,” he said teasingly.

“The second time you kissed me,” I argued, my voice becoming more breathy the longer he made

me wait.

“Yeah, but I’m trying to be-”

“Jesus, Brixton, just kiss me,” I rushed out, cutting him off.

I felt him smirk against my lips, just barely touching me.

“Say please,” he said with the deepest, raspiest, sexiest voice I’ve ever heard.

“Please,” I breathed out, not giving a sh.it about how needy I sounded.

“f***k, that was se.xy as hell, Lotus,” he growled, and I whimpered. Fu.cking whimpered.

And then his lips were on mine.

This kiss was rough. It was desperate. And it was fu.cking hot.

Jinx kissed me so hard he had to hold the back of my head to keep me still. His other hand came

to rest on my knee. I clung to him again, pushing my body into his as much as I could. It made his hand move higher, resting on my thigh. His hand was so big that it took up almost my whole thigh. His thumb was dangerously close to my center, and it made me squirmy.

I was getting lost in the kiss. My hands tangled in Jinx’s hair and I tugged. He groaned just like last time, and it made me needier. I pushed into him, clawing at him. I nipped at his bottom lip, sucking it into my mouth. The breathy sound that he let out made me whimper again. That seemed to snap something in him.

Suddenly, I was on my back with Jinx above me. My legs spread on their own accord to allow him to nestle there. One of his hands was holding the side of my neck, his fingers splayed out. The other hand moved down the side of my body with urgency. Until he gripped the side of my thigh. He stopped then, squeezed me, and pulled my leg up to wrap it around his firm body.

Holy sh.it, is this really happening?

Jinx pulled his lips from mine and kissed down to my jaw, then down to my neck. My eyes rolled back as a small moan tumbled out of me. Jinx’s body flattened on me more, pushing into me. I could feel the hard bulge in his jeans press against the soaked center of my jeans. I was panting, clawing at him as he placed sloppy wet kisses all over my neck.

“Brixton…” I moaned, my breath catching when he nipped at my skin. “D–don’t stop.”

“Tell me you’ll be here on Christmas,” he murmured against my skin.

“O–okay,” I agreed, wrapping my other leg around him and locking my ankles behind his back.

“Hmmm,” he hummed, the sound vibrating through my body. “Stay the night Christmas Eve.”

“B–Brix-”

“Tell me you’ll spend the night here with me,” he cut me off, his teeth scraping against my neck. “Tell me right now, and I’ll make you feel so good, baby.” His fingers moved between us until he grabbed the button of my jeans. Not undoing it, but holding it, waiting for me to reply.

Oh god, I’m about to explode.
