Jinx and I sat in the café at that table for a couple of hours just talking. It was kind of crazy how easy conversation flowed between us. For years, we’ve been yelling and bickering at each other. I never knew there could be something more. We could have been friends. Real friends.
The first friend I ever had the hots for.
Jinx was still talking, but I wasn’t listening. He leaned back in his seat and ran a hand through his hair as he continued to talk. His eyes held mine the entire time, never looking away. Even when I rambled on and on to him. He paid attention to me. Which is more than I can say about myself right now. I want to pay attention, but I can’t focus on anything other than those blue–green eyes. Or that smile he keeps giving me. Or how fu.cking hot he looks in his cut.
“You okay, Daisy?” he asked me.
I nodded and licked my lips. I intended on actually saying something when his eyes zeroed in on my lips. Anything I had to say died right then and there. Electricity sparked between us. Jinx pulled his eyes back to mine and the desire I saw there had me frozen in place. Just one look and I wanted him. I wanted him bad.
“Brixton,” I breathed out his name, and f***k, those eyes grew darker. His hand that never let go of mine squeezed harder. His jaw ticked. Something in me cracked the tiniest bit. “Want to get out of h-”
“There you guys are!” Birdie practically shouted as she rushed up to our table, pouring a big bucket of ice–cold water on our moment.
I jumped, trying to pull away from Jinx, but he wouldn’t let me. Instead, he looked at his sister with annoyance. My heart was hammering in my chest and I kept trying to pull my hand free, but Jinx only held on tighter.
“What the hell Birdie?” He ground out.
“Sorry,” she said, rolling her eyes and shifting Rosie from one hip to the other. “But we’re all getting ready to leave. Mom wants to get pizza on the way back and Dad is ready to get the f***k outta here.”
“Alright, we’ll meet you guys at the front,” Jinx said.
Birdie gave me a big smile before scurrying off. I kept trying to pull my hand free, but Jinx still wasn’t letting go. He looked at me once Birdie was out of earshot and leaned on the table, getting closer to me.

“What were you saying, Lily–pad?” He asked sweetly and my face flamed.

What was I saying? I was about to ask him if he wanted to get out of here. And go where? Without
his son and family? Where would we go? Was I willing to do something in public? What the hell is
wrong with me?
“Uhm, n–nothing,” I replied, suddenly feeling way too warm. “Uh, you think I could step aside and call
Deb real quick before we leave? I–I haven’t had a chance to call her yet.”
“Yeah, babe, of course,” he said as he stood up. “I’ll wait for you outside the doorway.” Then he kissed the top of my head and walked away.
It took me a moment to get my bearings in order before calling Deb. I knew I was going to have to
come clean about all of this to her. She was going to be thrilled. Which made me even more
nervous for some reason.
“Finally,” Deb answered. “I’ve been waiting for you to call all-”
“Deb, I did something,” I blurted, cutting her off.
“Are you okay, Deidra?” She asked, her tone suddenly hard and worried.
“I–I’m fine, b–but…” I trailed off. “O–okay, I don’t have a lot of time, so just listen. I ran into Jinx. He
and his family are here-”
“You what??” she asked.
“Just listen!” I hissed, making sure Jinx was still far away. “One thing led to another, and now we’re
pretending to be a couple, so he and Waylen don’t get harassed everywhere they go. But here’s the
thing… we, uh, well, I, uhm, k–kissed him a few times. And he’s been acting weird ever since it all
started, and I just really need you to give me a dose of reality before I jump the man’s bones and
beg him to let me have his next baby.” I rushed out, barely taking a breath through it all.
I was met with only silence.
“Deb??” I asked worried.
“I’m still here, just… trying to process it all,” she said
“I don’t know what to do, Deb,” I groaned. “Obviously, we’re attracted to each other, but it’s just… I’m just…” I trailed off, sighing before trying again. “I just need someone to tell me how it is. Remind me
of real life. Give me a serious dose of reality.”
Deb blew out a breath and was quiet for a moment
“You really want me to give you a dose of serious reality?” she asked.
“Please,” I begged.
“Okay, here it is,” she said. “That man likes you.”

“He’s liked you for years. Ever since y’all were little,” she continued. “You were the only one that never noticed it. And you thought he was some sort of bad luck charm, so you were mean to him. And just because he’s part of a motorcycle club doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings. That boy liked you so much that all the adults used to joke about it. That was how he got the name Jinx in the first place. I’m not sure why he never asked you out or whatever, but it sounds to me like the universe is giving you both an opportunity. A real Christmas love story.”
My jaw dropped.
“Have you lost your mind!?” I hissed through the phone. “Jinx does not like me like that. Never has. We barely even knew each other. We barely do now It’s just that, Waylen-”
“Loves the hell out of you, yeah, we all know,” she cut me off. “I can’t imagine how it must feel for Jinx to see the two of you together and pretend like he hasn’t had eyes for you since he was old enough to tell that he liked girls.”
“You sound insane,” I breathed out.
“I’m right, and you asked for the reality check,” she replied.
“No, you gave me nothing but delusions that made everything worse,” I complained.
“Really?” she asked, but kept going before I could answer. “Then ask him about how his MC scared Theo off, or why all the brothers seem to treat you with respect, or why none of them ever hit on you. Or better yet, why don’t you ask him about Sophie dropping the charges, or who canceled the venue and even knew about it, or… you could ask him about the night your parents died.”
“What?” I breathed out, all the air leaving my lungs. looked up, catching sight of Jinx. He wasn’t looking at me, and I was sure he couldn’t hear me either.
“I never asked,” Deb said gently. “Figured you would tell me if you wanted to, but… honey, who do you think it was that brought you home? We were all so worried. Everyone went out to search for you. Somehow Jinx knew exactly where to find you You were passed out in his arms, still crying in your sleep. All he said to me and the police officer was that you cried until you passed out. He carried you all the way to your bed. You almost didn’t let him go in your sleep. We had to shove a stuffed animal between you and shimmy him out of your hold.”
“I…” I trailed off, unsure of what to say.
Jinx did that? That happened? I mean, I assumed he helped me get home, but I guess I didn’t think he carried me there. He was old enough to drive, but he only had a motorcycle. So, how’d he get me home? Why was I clinging to him in my sleep? And how could he possibly never tease me about it?
“It doesn’t make sense,” I muttered.

“Oh, really?” Deb said sarcastically. “See, I thought that it was strange. I actually asked him if he
was your boyfriend. I thought maybe you just hadn’t told your parents for some reason. He told me no, but the look on his face… Oh, Deidra, I don’t have all the answers. Wish I did, but I don’t. All I know, is that boy has had a crush on you for years. Sounds to me like he’s taking this opportunity to his advantage. Just let him.”
“But what if you’re wrong?” I asked meekly, hating how pathetic I sounded.
“But what if I’m not?” she replied gently.
I blew out a breath as I looked at Jinx again. He caught my eye this time and smiled at me. Not a smirk. Not that teasing, se.xy smile either. This one was real, genuine.
“Thanks for the talk Deb,” I said without taking my eyes off Jinx. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”
“Okay honey, just… go with the flow, okay?” She replied.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Love you.”
“Love you,” she said before hanging up.
Go with the flow? Isn’t that what about had me asking Jinx if he wanted to get out of here? Was
that really a good piece of advice?
I guess we’ll just have to find out.
