Chapter 60: Leaving
Jinx’s P.O.V.
The whole family has been hanging out in the cabin all day together. The kids have been playing with their toys that they got, completely content with going nowhere for the day. Mom reheated leftovers all day for everyone. The adults have been scattered out most of the day, either playing with the kids or talking with each other.
However, my eyes have mostly been on Deidra all day. After the phone call with Deb, I took her phone. I told her to trust me, and let me handle things for her. I knew she trusted me, but she was still worried about Deb and riddled with guilt. I told her to take a long, hot shower and let it all melt away. I tried reassuring her the best I could, but I’m not sure how well that went. She hasn’t said much all day, but I can tell she’s still consumed by it
I was glad that I had taken her phone before she went to shower though. It was still left open, which gave me access to it without having to ask for it. It’s not like I was some jealous-crazed boyfriend who wanted to snoop. I just wanted to know everything she knew about the situation. Which wasn’t much. There were tons of messages from Deb, and no more than five from her so-called security company. Fu.cking five.
As annoyed and angry as I was about that stupid security company, I was even more worried when I noticed all the other messages from a random number that wasn’t saved. I admit that I hesitated about snooping through that chat for a total of five seconds. And I was glad as hell that I decided to look through it.
It was Sophie. Again. She had sent Deidra probably 50 texts, starting from sometime Christmas Eve, up until I fu.cking blocked her. Messages were still coming in while Deidra was in the shower. All of them were in-fu.cking-sane. To the point that had screen-shotted it all and sent it to myself before getting rid of all the evidence on Deidra’s phone. I didn’t want her to see it all and be even more stressed.
I always knew that Sophie was a special kind of crazy, but I wasn’t expecting this. When we were growing up, Sophie was the meanest girl in town. She hid it well, behind innocent looks and her daddy’s money. I always saw past her bullsh it though. I’d see the smirks when she would blame a mess she caused on someone else. I’d see her foot stick out to “accidentally” trip some random student walking by. And I heard all the bullsh it she used to spread about Deidra
I know that Sophie is the reason why Glory knew about my crush on Deidra. She even made shit up about Deidra seducing me or some shit. Like Deidra wasn’t a 13-year-old girl with absolutely zero interest in any boy, especially me. Sophie would spread awful rumors about Deidra the older we got. And the bit.ch would have the audacity to ton and tell Deidra what people were saying about her, like Sophie wasn’t the one to spread it all in the first place.
Deidra never cared though. I used to think that was why Sophie always did it. Because Deidra never gave a sh.it, and still believed everything Sophie would say. I used to think that Sophie just liked playing with her. She’s cruel like that, and Deidra is just too kind and trusting for her own good.
However, I thought about it all day after seeing those messages. And now I feel a bit differently about it. Like Sophie is more obsessed with Deidra than I thought.
I wasn’t surprised at all that Sophie had stolen Theo from Deidra. I wasn’t surprised that she stole her entire wedding, including that venue. I wasn’t even surprised when Sophie expected Deidra to get over it and act like none of it fu.cking happened
But I was surprised at the messages I saw. They were all generally the same thing. Sophie was losing her mind. She was trying to get a hold of Deidra to wish her a Merry Christmas. She started off by telling Deidra to get over it, but then she got angry. What had worried me the most were her messages that sounded threatening. She kept saying that Deidra better talk to her, talk this out, show her face, come home, talk to her. She never said anything like “or else”, but it felt implied.
Deidra seemed very sure that Sophie would eventually let this go, but something about it was just off. So, I sent all the screenshots to Psych and Baffle and asked them to look into things. We’ve been texting all day about Sophie and everything at Garden Sip, but there hasn’t been much information.
“Brixton, I think I should head back to my own cabin” Deidra said gently, making my eyes snap to her.
“What? Why?” I blurted.
She gave me a smile as her shoulders relaxed. Almost like she was telling me that I knew why she had to leave. But I fu.cking don’t.
“Is this because you’re still worried about Deb and Garden Şip?” I asked. “Deb told you herself that the guys fixed everything and you can open again tomorrow. We even got you access to the new cameras on your phone.”
“I know, and I’m so grateful for that,” she replied. “That’s not why I think I should go.”
“Then why?” I asked.
“Brixton,” she said, sounding annoyed as she frowned at me. “Look outside. It’s snowing like crazy. The news said we were getting a fu.ck-ton of it tonight. And I don’t have any more clothes here.”
“Then we can go get your clothes and come back,” suggested. “We can get snowed in together.”
Deidra sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose.
“I think I should just stay there for the night,” she said, looking at me again. “Just one night. We’ll see each other in the morning.”
“But why?” I asked, feeling defeated. “Did I do something wrong?”
“What? No, that’s not – you didn’t do anything,” she stumbled out the words. “I just… three nights in
a row, Brix?”
“Well, why not?” I asked. “We’re on vacation-”
Suddenly, my phone started ringing, cutting me off I pulled it out of my pocket to see that it was Psych. Which means he has information. I looked up at Deidra again and put my hands on her shoulders.
“Just… don’t go anywhere, okay?” I said. “I gotta take this. Then I’ll walk you back, and we’ll talk about you coming back here. Maybe Emma will give you some money back if you just stay with me
for the rest of the trip.”
“What? Are you kidding me? Have you not listened to anything-”
“Just give me five minutes, baby,” I cut her off, kissing her lips quickly before moving down the hallway to my bedroom.
“What’d you find out?” I asked as soon as I answered the call.
“Not much,” he replied, jumping right into it. One of my favorite things about Psych is that he doesn’t beat around the bush. “I don’t think Sophie did this,” he continued. “She and that piece of sh.it were celebrating with his family a few hours from town. They’re still there.”
“She coulda paid someone,” I said.
“Baffle is looking into it, but he’s having a hard time he told me. “Guess rich people have a lot of security walls on their bank accounts. He’ll probably be able to get into it by tomorrow. Doesn’t mean it’ll show anything.”
