Tara shatters their matchmaking illusions in a single heartbeat. Ignoring the open chair beside Evan, she deliberately wedges herself into the tight space between Aunt Kellen and Eleanor.
Evan stews in his rejection, his face tightening. He desperately wonders if Tara is simply playing hard to get, or if she truly feels nothing for him anymore.
Lana bites back her irritation. Her perfect, wealthy son came all this way to extend an olive branch, and this ungrateful girl dares to brush him off. Still, keeping her eyes fixed on the prize, Lana swallows her pride and says nothing. Deanna and the brothers follow suit, forcing polite conversation through the suffocating awkwardness.
Only Jade seems genuinely pleased. The icy, unbridgeable gap between Tara and Evan gives her a deep sense of satisfaction.
After dinner, the group moves to the garden. Evan hovers relentlessly around Tara, with Jake stepping in to act as a wingman. Tara ignores both of them entirely, completely engrossed in scrolling through her phone and managing her agency's surging business.
Jake finally snaps. "The least you could do is talk to Evan while he is here. You used to hang on his every word and admire how worldly he is."
"I was blind back then. I see perfectly fine now," Tara shoots back without looking up. "And please stop pretending we are close. Hearing you try to be affectionate makes me sick."
