"We might be a family soon, so we should be honest with each other," Jade continues, her eyes wide and pleading. "I truly see you as my future sister-in-law."
Against such cunning, manipulative tactics, Lucinda stands no chance. No matter how well-bred or patient a person is, enduring this level of emotional blackmail is suffocating. Her expression darkens, and she pulls her arm away, turning on her heel to leave. If she stays in this toxic environment for one more second, she is going to lose her mind.
"Wow, look at that ego," one of the bystanders mutters. "Jade practically begged for forgiveness, and she didn't even care."
"It's worse than that. She just stormed off without giving her fiancé's sister a shred of respect."
"If she acts this entitled in public, imagine what a nightmare she is behind closed doors. I guess you really can buy the title of 'top socialite' if you have enough cash."
Unaware of the underlying dynamics, the onlookers instinctively paint Lucinda as the difficult, unapproachable diva, while Jade is unanimously crowned the tragic victim.
"I'm so sorry you all had to see that," Jade sighs, offering the group an apologetic, girl-next-door smile. "Please, enjoy yourselves. Grab whatever you like to eat or drink. I need to go talk to her so she doesn't stay mad."
With a perfectly timed look of distress, Jade hurries off in Lucinda's direction. Her calculated exit firmly cements Lucinda's newly minted reputation as an arrogant, demanding princess.
