Tara crosses her arms, a mocking smirk playing on her lips. "Are you absolutely sure you treat her like a sister-in-law?"
The pointed question hits Jake like a physical blow, instantly reminding him of the cryptic warning Tara had given him earlier tonight. She had suggested that Jade actively sabotages his relationships because she doesn't want him to marry anyone. He had dismissed it as nonsense, but now Jade is alone with Lucinda on a deserted deck.
Why would she purposefully separate Lucinda from the crowd? What was her actual motive? None of this makes any logical sense.
Watching her brother's face, Jade catches the exact moment his unwavering faith falters. The subtle flicker of doubt in his eyes slices into her chest like a serrated blade. Her palms grow slick with cold sweat as blind panic sets in.
"Lucinda, tell me the truth," Jake demands, turning back to his fiancée. "Did Jade actually push you?"
Caught off guard by the direct question, Lucinda presses her lips together. A complicated wave of emotions washes over her as she meets his gaze. Instead of answering directly, she asks, "If I said yes, would you actually believe me?"
Before Jake can form a response, Jade's eyes flood with tears. Her devastated, trembling voice shatters the tense silence.
