"Don't even mention her," Jake snaps, his jaw clenching. "I have no idea who she got mixed up with during those years she was missing, but she is completely unhinged now."

In his eyes, Tara is no longer the sweet, brilliant little sister she used to be. She is a vindictive psycho hellbent on tearing their family apart.

"But what about Lucinda..." Jade murmurs, feigning concern.

"I'll handle it. Forget about her for now," Jake says firmly. "Today is your birthday. Mom and Dad threw this massive party just for you. You need to go mingle with the guests and build your network. I'll smooth things over with the Blue Family."

The Blue Family might not have the sheer financial dominance of the Dennis dynasty, but their old-money influence is nothing to scoff at. If they find out Lucinda was almost killed on Dennis property, there will be hell to pay.

"Okay," Jade says, offering him a sweet, watery smile. "I'll go find Mom and Dad. Let me know if you need help with anything." She gracefully lifts the hem of her designer gown and walks away.

Even if she can't definitively pin the blame on Tara, planting the seed of doubt is enough. The Dennis family will just despise Tara even more, and that is a win in Jade's book.
