"Instead of interrogating me, why don't you ask your precious Jade why the security cameras happen to glitch out wherever she goes?"
Jake narrows his eyes, a heavy frown settling on his features. Wherever Jade goes, the cameras would just break. When Lucinda nearly fell into the ocean earlier, Jade was right there, yet the surveillance feed for that exact timeframe was jammed. And now, with this assault, Jade is present once again. He frowns deeper. The implications are chilling.
As the crowd finally clears out, Jade seizes the opportunity to approach him. "Jake, what did she just say to you?"
She had watched Tara whisper to him, noting how his expression instantly darkened into a brooding mask. The shift in his demeanor sets her on edge.
"Why do you care so much about what she tells me?" Jake turns his head, his predatory gaze locking onto her. A subtle, unreadable glint flashes in his dark eyes. "Did you do something to her?"
This isn't the first time he has asked her this question. Alarm bells shriek in Jade's mind.
"No, of course not. I'm just worried she's picking another fight with you. Your relationship is already so strained, and I don't want it to get worse," Jade says, her voice trembling perfectly. "After all, I'm just an adopted daughter. If I'm the reason this family falls apart, I'd never be able to face my late parents."
