Jake thinks to himself: Once they taste the bitterness of being played, let's see if they can still spout such self-righteous nonsense. He refuses to warn them about Jade's true colors. Since he has suffered miserably at her hands, only to be criticized by his brothers, they can all go down together. Brothers should share the good and the bad, after all. He can't wait to throw their exact words back in their faces when the time comes.
"Mom, Nikolai, Alec, I'm fine. This is all my own fault for being too impulsive. It has nothing to do with Jake, so please don't blame him!" Jade says.
Since Jade just experienced Jake's violent reprimand, she doesn't dare provoke him right now. In the past, she would have put on a whole theatrical act of fake tears and long-winded excuses. But right now, she is genuinely panicking and desperately trying to smooth things over for him. She worries that if these two idiots keep attacking Jake on her behalf, it will only make him hate her more. And if she loses her grip on him, manipulating him in the future will be impossible.
"Look how much Jade defends you, yet you couldn't even protect her," Nikolai says, his voice tinged with sharp jealousy over how fiercely she is shielding their older brother.
Jake rolls his eyes, fuming inwardly. Idiots! Absolute morons!
"Alright, enough arguing," Deanna finally intervenes. "The most important thing is that Jade is okay. If your father finds out about this, he'll just chew me out again."
