Lounging in the passenger seat, Tara casually chats with Lucinda while dominating a round on her mobile game. Just as she secures the victory and exits the app, a flood of notifications pops up on her screen. They are all from Danny.
[I had no idea you held me in such high regard.]
[It seems you really are crazy about me. I'm that much better than Evan?]
Tara stares at the screen. What on earth is he talking about? Has he completely lost his mind, or did he text the wrong person?
She taps out a quick reply: [Did you text the wrong woman? Check your contacts before you hit send.]
He replies in half a second: [Are you jealous?]
[Are you a psycho?] Tara fires back. Interacting with this man always makes her blood pressure spike.
Danny: [Tara, I know everything that just happened at the restaurant. I know you compared me to Evan. I know you think I am absolutely perfect. You don't have to be shy. Admitting the truth is a good thing. I'm actually incredibly happy.]
Tara stops breathing. The relaxed, victorious mood she was just enjoying shatters into a million pieces. She nearly fumbles her phone onto the floorboard.
Lucinda glances over, noticing her sudden panic. "Tara? What's wrong?"
"N-nothing," Tara stammers, her face burning hot. "I just lost a ranked match. It's really upsetting."
He leans back in his leather executive chair, a wicked smile playing on his lips as he hits play for the hundredth time.
"Danny is better than you in literally every conceivable way..."
"He is strikingly more handsome... his body is infinitely better, his bank account is massively larger..."
"Do you have any idea how many women would kill for just one night with him?"
The audio loops continuously, filling the massive office for the entire afternoon. Danny decides right then and there: he is going to play this recording every single night before he goes to sleep.
