Nikolai flares up instantly, infuriated by Tara's utter lack of respect. She used to be so sweet and agreeable, always laughing and sharing secrets with him. Why is she acting like this now? Why can't she just be as considerate and well-behaved as Jade?
"Why can't I question her?" Tara challenges. "Are you saying she's some state-sanctioned genius who cured a global plague? Even top-tier researchers are subject to peer review. What makes Jade so untouchable?"
"I... I never said that. Why are you always so mean to me?" Jade stammers, her eyes welling up with tears. It is her signature move—she ought to patent it. Looking thoroughly victimized, she adds, "This is highly confidential corporate information. It's not something I can just openly explain in front of everyone."
In other words, she is hiding her sheer ignorance behind the guise of a non-disclosure agreement. 'Corporate secrecy' really is taking an unfair hit today.
Tara lets out a sharp laugh. "I didn't ask you to broadcast it on national television." She steps closer. "Just give a demonstration back at Dennis Group HQ for the internal R&D team. That way, if this happens again, we'll know how to handle it. You'd be doing the company a massive favor."
Cornered by Tara's relentless interrogation, Jade's panic spikes. She shoots a nervous glance at Nikolai, terrified he might actually agree and force her into a live demonstration. Masking her dread with a fragile, wounded expression, she looks up at her brother.
