Tara knows that a lie can never withstand scrutiny, especially with a complete amateur like Jade. Jade spent years failing in the entertainment industry, completely abandoning pharmacology. Exposing someone who is essentially a master of nothing is incredibly easy, but the timing isn't right yet. If she blows the lid off now, she won't inflict maximum damage. She needs to wait for the perfect moment to strike.
Having seen enough, Tara walks away. Only Nikolai is foolish enough to sit through Jade's narcissistic performance. She has far more important things to do.
The second Tara steps away, Jade cues the waterworks again. "Nikolai, did I say something wrong? Tara seemed so upset when she left."
"Ignore her. Ever since she came back from her little disappearance, she's changed. She's beyond saving, and the Dennis family is practically done with her," Nikolai scoffs, watching Tara answer her phone and walk off without a word. He is caught between anger and sorrow. He is furious because he assumes she ran away on purpose and picked up terrible habits from awful people, and he is devastated by how irreparably fractured their once-close bond has become.
He still can't comprehend why his grandparents always favored Tara, even as her behavior grew increasingly erratic. He assumes Grangpa Cian just felt guilty for her missing years and wanted to overcompensate. Nikolai had wanted to make it up to her too.
But Tara exploits that guilt, constantly bullying and attacking Jade, and he absolutely refuses to tolerate it. During the dark years when Tara was missing, Jade was the one who kept the family afloat, bringing joy into a house overshadowed by grief. That is exactly why they all cherish Jade. Why can't Tara just understand that?
