Eleanor is not the only one frustrated by the conversation. Kellen can no longer hold her tongue.
"Deanna, what on earth are you talking about?"
Kellen snaps, glaring across the table. "How is Tara being unreasonable? She is the most sensible, brilliant girl in this family. You all simply refuse to understand her."
She looks around in disbelief. How many young women in the world possess her niece's extraordinary competence while remaining so remarkably grounded?
Only people entirely out of their minds would place an outsider on a pedestal over their own blood. Jade has no biological ties to the Dennis family, yet she constantly drags their name through the mud with endless scandals. How can she possibly compare to Tara? Even if Tara were rebellious, she is a true daughter of the Dennis family. Kellen seethes at the sheer absurdity of it all, wishing she had the authority to slap some sense into every single one of them and throw Jade out onto the street.
"I do try to understand her," Deanna protests, her voice tight with self-pity. "Every time I politely ask her to come home, she refuses. Her brothers and Jade have reached out to her multiple times too." Deanna feels profoundly victimized. Why does everyone accuse her of favoritism? Even if she leans slightly toward Jade, she feels it is entirely justified. A sharp pang of loneliness hits her; she wishes Charles were here, convinced her husband is the only one who truly understands her.
"Politely ask her?" Kellen scoffs, crossing her arms. "If any of you were genuinely sincere, you wouldn't be constantly eyeing the shares she holds." Having walked right up to death's door and survived, Kellen sees through everyone's facades. She has zero interest in biting her tongue anymore.
