Chapter 47

Evan ignores her warning, stepping closer with desperate urgency. “Tara, I know you’re still angry, but just give me five minutes. Please, just five minutes to explain!”

He has been hunting for her for days, and now that he has finally caught her, he is vibrating with anxious energy. His family is breathing down his neck. If he doesn’t marry Tara, he will never inherit the family business.

‘There’s nothing to say. We have no relationship whatsoever. Stop harassing me,” Tara says, turning to leave. But Evan grabs her wrist in a vice grip.

‘Let go!” Tara demands, her voice like cracking ice.

‘Tara, I’m your fiancé! How can you be so heartless?” Evan accuses her, baffled by her cruelty.

‘The engagement has ended. The second you walked out of our engagement party, you and Jade proved you are made for each other. You two should really just tie the knot,” Tara snaps.

‘You’ve got it all wrong. Jade is just like family to me,” Evan pleads.

‘Oh, sure. So much family love that you two have no problem tangling yourselves up in each other’s arms,” Tara mocks.

‘It’s not like that!” Evan insists, his grip tightening violently. Tara’s wrist mmediately flushes red.

‘Let her go.”

Danny’s voice slices through the air from behind them, cold and sharp as a blade.

Evan drops her hand instinctively, his face shifting in shock. “Mr. Calhoun? You two…” He is completely bewildered. Why is Danny here?

“Evan, quite the gentleman, aren’t you? Harassing my date on my

property. Your family’s upbringing is truly something to behold,” Danny says, stepping forward to smoothly shield Tara behind his broad frame.

Evan adjusts his tie, forcing a calm expression. “Mr. Calhoun, there’s a misunderstanding. Tara and I are old friends. We were just catching up.”

Evan is no fool; he knows how to read the room. Offending a powerhouse like Danny is corporate suicide. But he cannot figure out why Danny, a man who never meddles in other people’s business, is stepping in. Do they know each other? Is Tara really his date?

Danny’s normally severe face softens entirely as he looks at Tara. “Do you need me to handle this?” He knows exactly who Evan is, and frankly, the man is a blind idiot.

“No. He’s a nobody,” Tara says coldly.

Without another word, the two of them walk out of the garden together.

Watching them leave, Evan balls his hands into fists, a dark, venomous look crossing his eyes. He never expected Tara to hook a massive catch like Danny. No wonder she treats him like garbage now.

“Tara, I’m not letting you go,” Evan mutters with a cold laugh. “Danny is just playing around. He won’t protect you forever.” He pulls out his phone and dials a number. “Hey. Look into the connection between Tara and Danny. Give me everything you can find.”

Danny and Tara walk out of the club side by side.

“Are you okay?” Danny looks down at her, his voice gentle.

Tara shakes her head, laughing lightly. “I’m fine. I just didn’t expect to run
