"You must be Miss Dennis," Jovani says, flashing a warm, polite smile. "You look remarkably like Mr. and Mrs. Dennis."
Despite her friendly facade, a toxic sliver of resentment burns in the depths of Jovani's eyes. She is quickly losing her patience with this infuriating girl.
"You should probably get your eyes checked," Tara fires back, making zero effort to be polite. "Nobody has ever said I look like them."
"Tara, watch your tone!" Nikolai immediately steps in, desperate to assert his authority. "That is Jade's aunt. Have some basic respect for her!"
"Tara can speak to whoever she wants, however she wants," Danny cuts in before Tara can even open her mouth. "It's certainly none of your business, you worthless excuse for a brother."
Danny doesn't care if people think he's ruthless or sharp-tongued. As long as he is protecting Tara, he'll gladly play the villain.
Tara looks at him, a genuine spark of admiration lighting up her eyes. That’s beautifully executed. Some people simply deserve to be put in their place. She mentally adds a few more points to Danny's rising score.
Nikolai looks like he wants to explode, but he forces himself to swallow the insults. They are at a high-profile event surrounded by the city's elite, and his last shred of sanity keeps him from causing a scene. His struggle to keep his mouth shut is almost painfully comical.
