Familiar or not, Howard knows for a fact that no twenty-something girl holds any real standing in their exclusive industry. He writes her off as a nameless nobody trying to hype herself up, precisely the kind of person he despises. However, since he needs to show the Sinclair family some respect in front of the massive crowd, he adopts a condescending tone.
"Well, little girl, since Bonnie gives you so much credit, I suppose I can throw a few basic questions your way to test your mettle."
"No thanks," Tara replies without a second of hesitation. "I'm not in the mood to be tested by anyone today."
She isn't stupid. She knows exactly what Bonnie is trying to do, and while she could effortlessly dismantle any academic question thrown her way, she refuses to set a precedent. If she proves herself now, every jealous socialite with a chip on their shoulder will summon some expert to quiz her. She has zero interest in entertaining these irrelevant people.
Howard freezes, convinced his ears are playing tricks on him. Did someone just reject his invitation? Being questioned and guided by him is an opportunity researchers beg for. People practically claw each other's eyes out for a fraction of his time, yet this girl just dismissed him in front of everyone. Does she have any idea who he is?
His face darkens with pure indignation. As a senior academician, he is used to endless flattery; no one has ever embarrassed him like this. The surrounding guests share equally shocked expressions, whispering about the young girl's arrogant ignorance.
"Hmph. What a massive ego!" Howard sneers, his voice dripping with anger.
Tara just watches him, utterly unfazed. For a man of his age to throw a tantrum over a single rejection proves his lack of composure. It is no wonder he is stuck at the lowest tier of academicians at the institute.
