Deanna and Alec look visibly embarrassed. As a mother, being scolded in front of her own child deals a massive blow to Deanna’s pride. Tara simply watches them with a mocking smirk. It is obvious Alec perfectly inherited Deanna's genes, as they both share the same single-minded, foolish stubbornness.
Following Eleanor's sharp reprimand, the mother and son finally quiet down. The rest of the meal proceeds in an uncomfortable silence, with Tara completely ignoring them to chat happily with her grandmother. Deanna and Alec are reduced to mere background decorations as Eleanor naturally focuses all her affection on her granddaughter.
As lunch winds down, Deanna can no longer hold back her underlying agenda. "Tara, your father and brothers mentioned that you're directly mentored by Mr. Reeves. Why haven't you ever brought this up before?"
"Why do I have any obligation to tell you?" Tara asks, her eyes gleaming with amusement.
"Tara!" Deanna chokes on her anger but quickly swallows it down. She reminds herself that this is her biological daughter and she needs a massive favor. Taking a deep breath, she forces a painfully sweet tone. "You're back working at Dennis Group now, so you must know that several of our major upcoming projects heavily rely on the pharmaceutical research institute. Could you put in a good word with Mr. Reeves? If he could just share his network and resources with us, it would be a game-changer."
"No," Tara replies without missing a beat.
She can see right through their transparent calculations. When there are millions of dollars on the line, they play the loving family. The moment her usefulness expires, they return to lecturing and berating her. Sometimes, she truly doubts whether she shares any blood with this woman. She has never encountered a mother so inherently selfish.
