"Yep! Danny is cooking dinner for Tara," Katie says, completely unbothered by the growing storm on her mother-in-law's face. Technically, the food is for her and Gavin too, but they are absolutely just riding on Tara's coattails today.
"What?" Catherine gasps, her voice trembling with horror. "Danny is personally cooking for this woman? Absolutely unacceptable!"
She looks as though she might faint. Her precious, golden grandson—the heir to an empire—soiling his hands to cook for a mere woman?
What a disgrace!
Her grandson is practically royalty. He commands the nation's financial pulse. A man of his untouchable status shouldn't be slaving away over a stove!
"Yes. Is there a problem?" Katie asks, blinking innocently.
"You're asking me if there's a problem? You think it's appropriate for him to cook for some girl? And to cook for everyone else on top of it?"
He is going to exhaust himself! Catherine's heart bleeds for him, assuming there's no way he's only cooking a single portion just for Tara.
"It's perfectly appropriate," Katie replies smoothly. "Cooking for his future wife is exactly what he should be doing. He gets that protective streak straight from his father."
She pauses, patting Catherine's rigid shoulder. "But don't worry. He's only making enough for Tara, Gavin, and me. He won't overwork himself."
The implication hangs heavily in the air: Catherine and Julianna are not getting any.
Catherine nearly has a heart attack on the spot.
"Oh, right. Mom, you already had lunch before you came over, didn't you?"
"I haven't!" Catherine forces the words out through ground teeth.
She deliberately starved herself just so she could secure a seat at the dining table.
