The excitement in the room hits a fever pitch. Whispers and declarations of determination fill the air as everyone prepares for a fierce bidding war.
"The starting bid for this masterpiece is ten million dollars, with a minimum increment of one million dollars per bid. The floor is now open!"
The collective gasp sucks the air from the room. A ten-million-dollar starting bid? That is absolute madness. Even for a royal antique, the baseline is astronomical. The highest starting bid all night had been around one million. Now, faced with ten million, half the room instantly gives up. It isn't that they don't have the money, but liquidating that much capital for a trinket—even to please a beautiful woman—is simply bad business.
"Alec! Alec! I want this. You have to win it for me!" Jade's previous boredom vanishes, replaced by a desperate, burning desire for the majestic, vintage set. If she can secure this, she can flaunt it in front of all her friends and make Tara choke on her jealousy. If it were a typical item for a few hundred thousand, she would just tell Alec to buy it. But with a starting bid this steep, she has to plead her case.
"Jade, this is way too expensive. It's not worth it. The starting bid alone could buy a luxury sports car," Alec replies, his brow furrowed in deep hesitation.
"I don't want a sports car! Cars lose their value the second you buy them," Jade snaps immediately. She is a terrible driver, hates racing, and doesn't want to risk her precious life in a crash. Besides, she has a chauffeur; being driven around makes her look far more elite.
While they are arguing, a smooth, casually cold voice echoes through the hall.
