Under normal circumstances, Nikolai is rarely home at this hour. But with a lighter workload today, he decided to return early, hoping to spend some time with Deanna and lift her spirits after the recent family drama.
He never expected to walk into his mother's bedroom and find her collapsed on the floor.
"Mmph!" Deanna desperately tries to speak, her eyes wide and frantic, but the sounds die in her throat. The harder she struggles to warn him about Jade, the more her body locks down. Her eyes roll to the back of her head, and white foam bubbles past her lips before she completely loses consciousness.
"Mom! Mom, please wake up!" Jade cries hysterically, wringing her hands in a picture-perfect display of panic. Her ability to switch masks in the blink of an eye has only grown more terrifyingly flawless over the years.
Nikolai scrambles for his phone and immediately dials 911, followed by a frantic call to Dr. Halloway, the family's private physician.
Once the calls are made, Nikolai turns his sharp gaze to Jade, his brow furrowing. "What are you doing here? Dad specifically told you to stay away from the estate for a while."
A fleeting thought crosses his mind—did his mother collapse because she was triggered by seeing Jade?
"I'm so sorry, Nikolai," Jade sobs softly, looking up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes. "I'm just so used to being here with all of you. Leaving the family so suddenly... it's been so hard for me. Alec mentioned Mom wasn't doing well mentally, and I was just so worried about her. I only wanted to check on her."
Her pitiful, trembling voice chips away at Nikolai's suspicions. Seeing her looking so helpless makes him soften, and he swallows the harsh reprimand he was about to deliver.
Suddenly, a sharp, aching pain blooms in Nikolai's chest. He winces, pressing a hand over his heart. The pain has been happening more frequently lately. He had gone in for a checkup, but the doctors found nothing, attributing it to severe anxiety. Given the absolute chaos engulfing the Dennis family lately, he had simply accepted the diagnosis and ignored it.
