Tara feels a faint twinge of disappointment, though it's entirely manageable. She parts her lips to say something, but the words fail to materialize. In the end, she gives a brief nod, turns on her heel, and walks away.
If Charles had said those exact words to her before she severed all ties with the family, they might have moved her to tears. But now, this belated affection feels hollow. Still, a strange, suffocating weight settles in her chest. A quiet voice in the back of her mind warns her that she might regret walking away today.
But why should she? When she walked out of the Dennis estate, she swore to cut them out of her life permanently. She shakes her head, forcing the intrusive thoughts away.
Meanwhile, in the private underground parking garage of the Dennis Group headquarters, the atmosphere is suffocatingly tense.
"Benny, how many years have you worked for me?" Charles asks, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. He stares down his longtime chauffeur. "I trusted you with my life, and you sold me out."
Benny has been by his side for over a decade. Beyond driving, he was the man Charles trusted with covert tasks.
"S-Sir, I didn't! You have it all wrong, Mr. Dennis," Benny stammers, beads of cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
"I had you occasionally drive Jovani so you could report back to me, not so you could let her buy your loyalty," Charles sneers, the usual warmth in his eyes replaced by a lethal coldness. "I suppose the blame falls on me. I expected loyalty, but I was outplayed by my own employee."
