Even though Jovani is a cold-blooded operative, watching the man she lived with for so many years get gunned down right in front of her is deeply jarring. The fake love had bred a strange, lingering familiarity. Seeing him bleed out is a shock to her system.
The mastermind steps forward with casual, terrifying elegance. He stops beside Charles's body, picking up the shattered phone. He glances at the unsent text, a cruel smirk playing on his lips.
"Trying to play the hero and sneak a message out? Pathetic."
He tosses the phone aside and gestures to Gregory.
Gregory immediately kneels beside the body, prying the vintage wooden box from Charles's stiffening fingers. He hands it up to his boss with utter reverence.
The mastermind flips the latch and opens the box. His smirk instantly vanishes, replaced by thunderous rage.
"Damn it! He played us! The box is completely empty!"
He hurls the wooden box onto the concrete, shattering it into splinters.
"What... what do we do now, sir?" Gregory asks, his voice tight with anxiety.
"Charles is dead. He can't point them to us. Scrub this location until it sparkles; I don't want a single trace left behind," the mastermind orders, adjusting his cuffs. "Dead men don't talk. It's better the item is lost to the world than falling into the wrong hands."
He would have preferred to study the artifact in his labs, but a permanent stalemate is acceptable.
"But what if he secretly passed it on to someone else?" Gregory presses.
