"You could always stay," Tara mocks lightly. "Maybe you'll dig up some more useful intel for your boss."
Nathaniel catches the sarcasm, but he tries to maintain a shred of dignity. "Yeah, I don't have the face to stay. And I definitely don't have the face to look at you."
He stares at the young woman, a bitter taste in his mouth. Explaining himself now would just sound like pathetic excuses. If he had won, he could have kept his pride. But he lost completely. His skills were inferior, and he picked the wrong side. There's no future for him here.
"You really shouldn't have the face to look at me," Tara replies, her gaze distant. "And you failed your grandfather and your father, too."
The men in Nathaniel's family served the Dennis family for generations. They were the most trusted subordinates. Tara had her suspicions about him, but considering their families' history, their childhood friendship, and his usual character, she gave him the benefit of the doubt. He simply hid his tracks flawlessly.
Nathaniel remains silent, his expression unreadable.
"When exactly did you team up with Jovani?" she asks, genuinely curious. "What kind of benefit did she promise you to make you turn your back on the Dennis family?"
Knowing Nathaniel, he was never overly ambitious or greedy.
He presses his lips together. After a long pause, he says softly, "That's not something you need to know."
Oh, look at him. Acting all high and mighty!
