Chapter 82
Chapter 82
The thought of losing fifteen million dollars for absolutely nothing makes Jake wince. He glances at Jade. Seeing her red-rimmed eyes and trembling lip, he swallows his frustration and holds his tongue. After all, Tara is the true mastermind here. Jade is simply too naive. They have protected her so well that she has no concept of how vicious people can be.
The luxury sedan pulls into the Dennis family estate. The moment Jake steps out, the head butler hurries over. “Sir, your father is waiting in the study. He doesn’t look pleased.”
Jake frowns and turns to Jade. “Go straight to your room. Don’t let Dad see you right now.
Being summoned to the study never ends well. Jade bites her lower lip, keeping her head down. “I’m sorry, Jake.”
Jake waves her off and heads straight for the study. When he pushes the door open, his father is standing with his back turned, staring out the window. The oppressive silence in the room is suffocating.
“Dad,” Jake greets quietly.
Mr. Dennis turns around, his face dark with rage. “Your sister dropping fifteen million on a counterfeit necklace is already the laughingstock of the entire social circle! Where is our family’s dignity?”
Jake’s chest tightens. “Dad, there’s more to the story. Tara deliberately set a trap for her…”
“Enough!” Mr. Dennis slams his hand against the heavy oak desk. “You two are unbelievable! The company’s cash flow is tight right now, and instead of helping, you’re out there recklessly burning through money and making us look like fools!”
This is the harshest reprimand Jake has ever received. He is just thankful Jade isn’t in the
room to hear it.
But he is wrong. Jade stands perfectly still right outside the cracked study door, hearing every single word. A heavy lump forms in her throat. Her father has always adored her, and knowing she has deeply disappointed him twists her stomach into knots.
Tara! This is all because of Tara!
Jade retreats to her bedroom, the bitter taste of resentment burning on her tongue. A murderous glint flashes in her eyes. She grabs her phone and dials a number she hasn’t used in a long time.
“Hello? Shane? It’s been a while,” Jade purrs, pitching her voice into a sickly-sweet, helpless
tone.
A sleazy chuckle crackles through the speaker. “Jade! Long time no see. What makes you call me out of the blue?”
