Her sudden, explosive movement sends Danny tumbling backward into the pillows.
"Whoa, baby, what's wrong?" he asks, his heart skipping a beat. He suddenly worries he pushed his luck too far and genuinely upset her.
Before he can apologize, Tara gasps, "I figured it out!"
Danny instantly lights up. "Really? You figured out you want to do the cardio?"
He reaches for her, fully prepared to pull her back under him.
Tara kicks him squarely in the leg. "Shut up! I figured out my dad's clue!"
She scrambles off the bed, grabs the worn diary from the nightstand, and flips to the pages she had stared at a hundred times.
"I knew these entries felt weird! The phrasing was always just a little too clunky. Look at this!"
"Look at what?" Danny asks, leaning over her shoulder, completely lost.
"If you take the seventh word from the end of every single line in these specific paragraphs, it spells out a completely different message! This is what he was trying to tell me!" Tara explains, her voice trembling with excitement.
For years, these paragraphs just looked like Charles rambling about his regrets. But now, strung together, the hidden text forms a perfect set of coordinates and instructions.
"Why the seventh word from the end?"
"Seven is my lucky number. He remembered," Tara whispers, a fresh wave of emotion hitting her.
"You're exactly my girl. And soon you'll be my wife, because I am never letting you go," he murmurs, kissing the sensitive skin below her ear.
They hold each other for a long moment before Tara pulls back, her expression turning deadly serious.
"The drive is buried under the old oak tree at our coastal vacation house. We have to go get it."
The hidden message was mostly her father telling her how much he loved her, followed by the exact location of the encrypted data. Charles likely set it up so that if she was clever enough to decode it, she was ready to handle the truth. If not, the secret would stay buried, keeping her safe.
But Tara isn't looking for safety. She wants blood.
She is going to drag the mastermind who ruined her family out into the light and destroy them.
