In the past, looking at her father's diary gave her a strange, nagging feeling that something was hidden between the lines. Tonight, however, her anxiety acts like static, scrambling her focus. She feels like a rat trapped in a maze.
Frustrated, she runs her hands through her damp hair, slamming the diary shut and tossing the cracked phone onto the nightstand.
"Where the hell did you hide it?" she mutters, her eyes dark with defeat.
Nathaniel was so certain her father left a clue, but she is coming up completely empty. A dark thought creeps in: maybe she didn't love him enough to understand his mind? Or worse, maybe he never intended to burden her with the truth at all.
She slumps onto the plush rug, pressing her back against the cool wall, trying to force her racing heart to slow down. If Charles really left a clue, it wouldn't be hidden in plain sight. He was a master tactician. A secret this big would be buried deep.
Danny steps out of the bathroom, a towel slung low on his hips. Seeing his fierce, unstoppable girlfriend looking so small and defeated breaks his heart.
Moving with effortless strength, Danny scoops her off the rug and carries her to the massive bed.
"Take a breath. You can't force a revelation when you're this stressed," he murmurs, following her down onto the mattress.
He presses a tender kiss to her forehead, trailing slowly down to her eyelids, the bridge of her nose, and finally capturing her lips. The deep, grounding affection in his touch begins to melt the ice in her veins.
Danny knows exactly where the line is. If he pushes for more right now, she will probably kick him off the bed.
So, he plays the perfect gentleman, pulling her securely against his chest. "Just close your eyes, beautiful. The answer will be there in the morning."
