Danny holds her so tightly she can barely breathe. His familiar, crisp scent envelops her, yet her mind cruelly mixes it with the phantom, coppery stench of blood from the tea room. The horrific memory of the stabbing violently crashes back into her mind.
She instinctively flinches. Sensing her distress, Danny tightens his grip, resting his chin gently on the top of her head. "Don't be afraid," he murmurs, his voice rough with emotion. "It's over. I've got you."
"Danny," Tara says, her voice hoarse from sleep and trembling slightly. "My mom... what happened to my mom?"
Fully lucid now, Tara's first thought is Deanna. Her mother had wrested the knife away and killed Jade to save her. In a busy establishment with countless witnesses, there was zero chance she could escape.
*What is going to happen to her?* Tara's heart races. Her fingers turn white as she clutches Danny's shirt, her eyes filling with tears.
"Where are the police? Did they take her away? Is she... is she going to be okay?"
She doesn't dare say the word "executed." The sheer weight of it suffocates her. She vividly remembers the absolute finality in her mother's eyes, and the blood spraying as Jade collapsed. The scene is seared into her brain. She can still smell the heavy, metallic stench of blood, a sickening contrast to Danny's clean scent, constantly reminding her that the nightmare was terrifyingly real.
