Despite her relaxed posture, her mind races with a chaotic swirl of thoughts. She finally decides to take the initiative and call Nikolai, desperate to know her mother’s current situation.

She stares at her phone, debating whether a call or a text would be better. Before she can make up her mind, the device buzzes in her hand. Nikolai’s name flashes across the screen. Her chest tightens. With trembling fingers, she swipes to answer and presses the phone to her ear.

Before Tara can figure out what to say, Nikolai’s exhausted but steady voice comes through the speaker. "Tara, how are you holding up? Danny mentioned you finally woke up. Are you in any pain?"

Tara swallows hard, fighting the lump in her throat. "I'm okay," she says, forcing her voice to stay level. "How... how is she? What did the police say?"

Her mother's fate is the only thing that matters right now. Her heart pounds so hard it feels like it might leap out of her throat. She grips the phone until her knuckles turn white.

Sensing her suffocating anxiety, Nikolai quickly reassures her. "I know that's why you're worried. Jake, Alec, and I have been out of our minds with worry over you, so hearing you're awake is a massive relief. I called to tell you that Mom is fine. She's already been released. You don't need to stress anymore."
