He still had that half–joking look on his face, but the moment he noticed something was off with Chris, he dropped it and followed him downstairs.
They didn’t speak until they were all the way down and safely out of earshot of the people upstairs. Only then did Dominic lower his voice and ask, “Skyla hired someone to kill. If William hadn’t taken that knife for Winter, she could’ve died. Are you really going to protect Skyla?”
Chris lit a cigarette. He had already washed the blood from his face, leaving behind only that cold, hard look.
He said nothing. He only stood there smoking in silence.
After a moment, he crushed out the cigarette and said, his tone unreadable, “Skyla’s bone marrow is very important to me.”
Dominic froze.
After Chris took Winter away from Westbury, the Zeller family sent bodyguards to surround the house. With the Zellers‘ power, taking Skyla from Westbury shouldn’t have been difficult.
But by the time their men got there, the place was already empty.
The bodyguard immediately called Sean.
On the other end, Sean’s voice stayed steady and calm. “Looks like Chris really is determined to protect Skyla.”
There was no doubt about it. Chris had moved her.
Most likely, the moment Chris finished personally questioning that woman yesterday, he had already started putting everything in place. Sean knew very well that very few people could ever see through a man like Chris.
“She won’t have been sent out of the country that quickly,” Sean said. “Keep looking. She should still be somewhere in Liono City.”
After ending the call, Sean turned and saw William awake in the hospital bed. He walked over and bent down beside him.
“William.”
After coming out of the ER, William had forced his eyes open so Winter would see he was okay. But once they got into the elevator, his mind had started to fade, and all he had managed to mumble was, “I’m okay. I’m okay.”
“Sean…” The moment William heard how weak and hoarse his own voice sounded, a wave of helpless humiliation hit him. When had he ever looked this pathetic?
He steadied his breathing and asked, “Who did you just say Chris was protecting?”
Sean laid a hand over his chest, which was rising and falling harder with emotion. “Skyla Jasper hired someone to kill. She murdered that housekeeper and then tried to kill Winter too.”
Just as expected, the moment Sean said those words, blood slowly rose into William’s eyes. He spoke one word at a time, slow and heavy with fury.
“Chris is protecting Skyla?”
