Dominic opened the car door with his keys and casually tossed them into the console. He was just about to start the engine when something in the corner of his eye made him jerk.

“Holy… Winter!” He clutched his chest, his heart pounding.

“Drive.”

Winter was curled up low in front of the passenger seat, her dark hair falling around her face, her red–rimmed eyes fixed on him. Her expression was blank.

For a second, he thought he had seen a ghost. She had scared the life out of him.

Dominic usually never locked his car doors, and this time she had taken full advantage of that.

“Drive,” Winter said again, her face set.

She was trying to sound tough, but with that pale, bloodless face, she looked more heartbreaking than scary.

Thinking back to what had happened that morning, Dominic frowned. He had always seen Winter as a younger sister, and he felt sorry for her.

His tone softened. “I can’t take you out of here.

“For starters, I’m no match for Chris. And I’m not going to go behind his back. Be good and listen to me, okay? Go back inside. If Chris promised you something, he’ll follow through. He always does.”

A bitter ache rose in Winter’s chest. “Just pretend you didn’t see me and drive. Dominic, hurry up.”

Did he really think Chris was doing right by her by keeping her under house arrest here?

Dominic tightened his grip on the steering wheel and glanced out the window at something not far off. Then he let out a sigh, unable to meet her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

He leaned over and hit the unlock button.

The door popped open immediately.

Winter turned and saw Chris striding toward the car, his face cold and unreadable.

Her heart tightened. She yanked the door shut, then threw herself across the seat at Dominic. In the same motion, she shoved open the driver’s door and kicked him hard out of the car.

“Ow!” Dominic hit the ground and rolled before scrambling back to his feet. He stood there, exasperated and helpless, watching Winter start the car.

He hadn’t expected her to be this fierce.

A little fox? She was more like a wild animal.

Only Chris, Zac, and Steve would want a woman like that.
