Sasha’s heart skipped at his words. She rushed forward and snatched the glass from his hand. “You can’t touch him!”

Steve was the child she had carried for ten months. And the man standing in front of her was someone she had loved for over thirty years. She couldn’t accept him laying a hand on her son.

“He’s not my son. Why wouldn’t I?” The man showed no sign of anger at having his glass taken away.

His gaze swept over her. She still held herself with practiced composure, but the redness in her eyes gave away her anxiety.

“I’ve already said this once,” he continued coolly. “Helping him is not happening. Putting aside the fact that I wouldn’t win against Chris, after what he did, you shouldn’t have come to me at all.”

With that, his expression hardened, and he turned to leave.

Sasha’s heart tightened. Without thinking, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “You’re leaving?”

“I can’t stay out too long.” His expression remained blank.

He glanced down at her hands. They were clearly well cared for, her fingers smooth and pale, almost flawless.

Her hands used to look just like that too.

But now, where was she?

He pulled her hands away without hesitation, his voice cold. “I’m going.”

“Are you truly refusing to help me?” her voice came from behind him.

He stopped and turned back, his gaze sharp. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Sasha met his warning look. The room was wide and open, yet the air felt suffocating.

She had known this man since she was a teenager. She knew him well. That look meant he was angry.

But Sasha wasn’t someone he could push around anymore. Over the years, everything he had taken from her, whether money or support, had never been returned in equal measure. For Steve’s sake, she had to take back some

control.

She met his gaze and said coldly, “If you won’t help me, I’ll tell Winnie the truth.”

The words had barely left her mouth before he strode toward her. Before she could say anything else, his hand closed around her throat.

“Don’t you dare.”
