Chapter 355
Winter watched as Chris took the bottle that should have been hers.
Her expression stiffened for a moment, but she gave up the thought of snatching it back.
She stayed seated across from him, quietly watching as he finished the entire bottle and set it down.
“Don’t regret it.” Chris’s hoarse voice sounded forceful, but beneath it was something she couldn’t quite name.
A plea.
Yes. Winter heard a trace of pleading in it.
And it had come from Chris Xander, of all people. From a man who had always stood so far above everyone else, cool, noble, and untouchable.
She had only had two glasses. How was she already drunk enough to start hallucinating?
Her fingers paused slightly.
But when she looked at him again, his eyes were clear and calm, as if nothing had happened.
Winter picked up a new bottle. She lowered her head and stared at the bubbles in her glass for a long time before finally asking, “Have you ever missed that child?”
If the baby had survived, he would be one year and one month old now.
But he had already become a little angel.
Chris’s dark, bottomless eyes fixed on her lashes as they slowly grew damp. His fingers curled into a loose fist, the joints tightening.
Before coming upstairs, he had received a call from the hospital.
Richie had finally woken up after sleeping for an entire day.
If they still couldn’t find a suitable bone marrow donor, his condition would only get worse.
Richie’s situation was unusual, and the stem cells he needed were just as specific. If an ordinary person’s chance of finding a matching donor was one in ten thousand, then Richie’s chance was one in ten million. Maybe even one in a hundred million.
Chris slowly unclenched his hand.
Then he picked up the whole bottle.
He chose to drink.
Winter caught the movement from the corner of her eye, and her chest felt heavy.
But somehow, it also felt expected.
After they lost the child, they had never talked about it.
Chris had never shown anything in front of her either.
It was as if that child had never existed at all.
