Chapter 365
The basement door slammed shut.
The bodyguards left as well.
Skyla collapsed to the floor and stared at the heavy door. Her tears were about to fall, but the moment she remembered that Chris had promised to publicly distance himself from Winter, she forced them back.
Then she smiled.
“Winter, this time, I’m going to take Chris back from you again.”
Chris walked into the living room on the first floor. Outside, the sky had already begun to brighten.
He glanced at the wall clock.
Five thirty.
At this hour, Winter was still asleep.
“Mr. Xander, are you really going to agree to her terms?” Gavin asked.
He knew better than anyone what Chris and Winter’s relationship was like right now.
If Chris publicly told the press that he had nothing to do with Winter, then whatever fragile connection still remained between them would collapse completely. It was already like a storm-battered house by the sea. One more gust of wind would be enough to tear it apart.
Chris said nothing.
He walked to the liquor cabinet, opened it, and took out a bottle.
Watching him drink, Gavin suddenly realized that Chris hadn’t gotten a proper night’s rest in days.
Between Richie and Winter, he had been running himself into the ground. On top of that, he still had to deal with the mess Steve had caused at the corporation.
Before taking Winter to the island to help her clear her head, Chris had stretched every minute as far as it could go just to get his work done.
And during the two days he had been away, even more work had piled up at the company.
Chris drank in silence, his mind on Richie lying in the ICU.
