The stinging in her wrist grew stronger and stronger. Whoever was coming to save her must be getting closer.
A cold smile touched Skyla’s lips.
She was Bart’s daughter.
For the past three years, she had only kept a double overseas, making everyone believe she had been abroad the whole time. In truth, during the six months before Chris contacted her, she had been living near the border.
There were countless ways to break a person there, and more darkness than ordinary people could ever imagine.
After two and a half years in that world, she was no longer the same Skyla Jasper she had once been. Besides, Bart’s blood ran in her veins.
That was why, during the shooting at the Xander family’s senior care center, those people had recognized her and spared her. It was also why she had been able to pick up a gun, injure herself, and earn Chris’s pity.
Victor had been right.
She was Bart’s daughter.
Bad blood from the start.
Victor had kept her and Jacob alive only because he feared Bart’s brutality.
Later, after Bart died, it wouldn’t have been hard for Victor to get rid of his two children. The problem was that by then, Skyla and Winter were close friends, and Skyla was often in and out of the Xander estate.
If Skyla died, Winter would look into it. Victor was terrified that what had happened back then would be exposed, so he didn’t dare kill her or Jacob.
After that, Skyla saved Chris’s life. The Xander family owed her a debt. Victor hated her, but he couldn’t give up the benefits that came with her connection to the Xanders.
But those benefits had never been what she truly wanted.
She wanted Chris’s love.
As things stood, once she was no longer useful, she would be nothing more than a pawn to be discarded.
Why couldn’t Chris love her?
How was she any less than Winter?
She was just as intelligent as Winter. She was gentler than Winter. She had more power than Winter.
What Bart left her wasn’t just money, but connections along the border.
He hadn’t liked her either. But the first time he saw her, he decided that out of all his illegitimate children, she was the one most like him.
At first, she had rejected that idea with everything in her.
But little by little, she realized it was true.
She really was like Bart.
