Skyla looked at the dead guard, then slowly lifted her eyes to the rearview mirror. Her gaze met the driver’s.
He had Gavin’s exact face.
She asked carefully, “You’re not Gavin?”
“I’m his twin brother.”
Skyla froze.
In the clearing outside the red–roofed house on the outskirts, Fabian smiled when he saw Winter’s reaction. His expression was almost warm.
“It seems you still remember me, Ms. Scott.”
Winter stayed on guard, watching everything around her. Fabian’s men had her surrounded.
She did not know how Fabian had managed to bring so many people into Liono City. Worse, they were all armed.
People could slip in.
But guns and ammunition should never have made it through so many layers of security without being noticed.
Unless Fabian had someone on the inside.
Steve was locked up, so who else could it be?
And judging by what had happened, that person was probably connected to the way she had somehow ended up here without realizing it.
Before she could piece anything together, Fabian shook his head and said mildly, “No, that isn’t right. I should call you Mrs. Xander. Anything else would be rude.”
A man like Fabian had spent years at the border, killing without hesitation and poisoning innocent people. Yet here he was, playing the part of a polished gentleman.
It was almost laughable.
Winter forced down the anger rising inside her and said calmly, “You’re too polite, Mr. Kane. Chris and I aren’t married. You should call me Ms. Scott. I’d prefer that.”
Fabian’s eyes darkened for a brief moment.
Then he raised an eyebrow. “Oh? It sounds like quite a lot has happened recently. How interesting. Once we get where we’re going, we can talk properly.”
Winter’s heart skipped. “Where are you taking me?”
