Chapter 420
Along the narrow mountain path, Chris strode toward William and Winter.
His hiking boots scraped over the loose gravel with every step. Blood dripped from between his fingers and fell onto the stone
Armed bodyguards surrounded them. A pale half–moon hung above the ridge, and overhead, armed helicopters were still loc in a fierce fight.
But Fabian’s side was clearly losing.
The battle looked like it was almost over.
Winter took the chance to pull free from William’s hand and push him behind her. Her eyes were red as she faced Chris.
He had really meant to kill William just now.
“What do you want from me?” she asked.
William stepped forward again and reached for her arm, trying to pull her behind him.
But the moment his hand touched her, he felt how stiff she was beneath her sleeve.
She was trembling.
He stopped.
After twenty years of knowing each other, he understood her too well.
This time, he couldn’t step in for her.
So he let go.
But he stayed right beside her.
“Come here,” Chris said quietly.
His eyes were so dark they seemed bottomless. Not even the moonlight could reach them. He didn’t look at anyone else. With every step he took, his gaze stayed fixed on Winter.
His voice was low, but it still made the air around them turn cold.
For some reason, seeing him like this made Winter think of what had happened after they tell from the cliff.
The promise he had made between life and death, saying he would tollow her.
The way he had taken off his jacket without hesitation.
The broad, steady back that had carried her through the forest
She forced down the ache in her chest
“Go back with you?” she asked. “So we can keep dragging each other through this endless mess

Their marriage had never truly existed. The hurt and betrayal he had caused her in the past, whether intentional or not, were things she couldn’t get past.
“Don’t you understand?” she asked. “Some things can’t be fixed once they’re broken.”
He listened quietly as Winter spoke. Her eyes were clear, fall of pain and regret, but there was no hesitation in them.
The calmer she looked, the more something wild and dangerous seemed to churn in his eyes.
“If it can’t be fixed, then we won’t fix it,” he said. “From now on, you’ll stay by my side. You can still do the work you like. Once I deal with Fabian…”
The moment he said she could still do the work she liked, she almost laughed.
On New Year’s Day, she had called Jimmy full of hope to ask about the overseas correspondent position in Eveland. Instead, she had been told that because Chris had made one phone call, her name had been taken off the list.
