Something stirred in Chris’s chest.

He walked over to Winter and instinctively glanced at her wrist.

The bandage was still tied in the same messy knot from yesterday. She hadn’t changed the dressing, but she hadn’t hurt herself again either.

“Let’s go.”

Winter nodded.

“Okay.”

Inside the isolation room, Richie had no idea what he was about to face today.

Chris had tried to explain a little yesterday, but Richie was too young. He didn’t understand.

When he woke up that morning, his whole body hurt. He felt weak all over, worse than usual.

But he didn’t know how to say it.

He didn’t know what to do.

All he could think about was his mommy.

He forced his eyes open and kept looking toward the door. Then, with every bit of strength he had, he tried to push himself up and sit on the bed, waiting quietly for his mommy to come hold him, just like she had these past few days.

At last, he saw two people in protective suits walk into the isolation room together.

His eyes lit up.

It was Mommy and Daddy.

The moment Winter saw him like that, she knew he had been waiting for her again, just as Dr. Carter had said.

The thought made her heart twist with pain.

She hurried to Richie’s side and gently lifted him into her arms.

“Baby, Mommy’s here.”

She let Richie rest his head against her chest. Then she lowered her head and gently held his little hand through the protective suit.

“You were waiting for Mommy, weren’t you? Mommy’s right here. I’ve been here the whole time.”

The nurse was about to make Richie’s formula when Chris walked over and took the bottle from her.

He poured in warm water from the insulated pitcher, opened the can of formula, and added a few scoops. Then he screwed the lid on, set the bottle in the mixer, and let it spin for a few seconds.

Bottle in hand, he crouched beside Winter, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, and brought the nipple to Richie’s mouth.

“He’s hungry.”
