Chapter 498
She walked slowly down the hallway and glanced up at the electronic display overhead.
Two in the morning.
Dawn was still so far away.
The hallway was too quiet. Two of the lights near the nurses’ station had been turned off, making the light less harsh. The remaining lights were spaced far apart, stretching her shadow long across the floor.
She was wearing soft-soled shoes, and she walked slowly, so her footsteps made almost no sound.
Chris was standing by the window at the corner of the hallway, smoking.
The moment a long, thin shadow fell across the base of the wall, his hand paused as he flicked ash from his cigarette. He lifted his eyes and looked toward the other end of the shadow.
Their eyes met.
Before Winter could react, Chris had already put out his cigarette.
He stubbed it out, then pushed the half-open window as wide as it would go.
The smoke scattered into the wind.
Only then did Winter notice that his eyes were a little red.
It was two in the morning.
He was out here smoking for the same reason she couldn’t sleep.
She and Chris were no longer together but they still shared a child.
“Why aren’t you asleep?”
Chris’s voice broke the silence of the hallway.
He had just smoked, so his voice was low and hoarse.
Their shadows overlapped on the floor.
Winter looked at him quietly. After a few seconds, she said, “I couldn’t sleep.”
Once the smoke had cleared, Chris looked at the thin hospital gown she was wearing and closed the window.
Winter had passed in Liono City, but the wind in the middle of the night was still cold.
“Want to go downstairs for a walk?” he asked.
Winter did not answer.
Chris turned toward the shadowed stairwell.
“Bring her coat.”
“Yes, sir.”
A tall figure stepped out of the darkness and disappeared around the corner. A short while later, he returned with two coats. One was Chris’s, and the other was Winter’s.
Chris was about to drape Winter’s coat over her shoulders when she said, “I can do it myself.”
