“I, Celine Miller, of the Blood Moon Pack, legitimate daughter of Darius Miller, accept your rejection.”

Those words continue to haunt him.

All that time, he believed Celine was a servant in the pack house. They had made him believe that the daughter from the alpha’s second marriage was Darius’s only daughter. He never imagined that the young woman he had rejected in front of everyone was the very daughter her own family had chosen to hide.

Tanner clenches his jaw as he continues walking. The rain mixes with the water running down his face, but he doesn’t bother wiping it away.

“I have to get out of here as soon as possible,” he tells himself.

When he reaches his settlement, he gives the necessary orders without wasting any time. His people begin gathering their belongings, preparing the carts, and assembling the warriors. They don’t need much to leave. They have spent too long living under Darius’s orders not to know what to do when the time comes to abandon a camp.

But before they can set out, Darius and Casius’s wolves emerge from among the trees.

They surround them.

Tanner stops in front of the wolves blocking the path. The rain falls so heavily that at times it is difficult to make out their faces through the curtain of water, but he recognizes several of them. They are Darius and Casius’s warriors. They are tired, soaked, and have spent far too long living on the same supplies that are now beginning to run out. Some hold their weapons with both hands, not out of caution, but because exhaustion already weighs heavily on their muscles.

Casius appears among them with an arrogant smile.

“Are you really leaving, you damn coward?”

Tanner watches him in silence. Behind him, his pack continues preparing the last of the animals and gathering the supplies. No one runs. No one screams. No one seems surprised.

“I’m not staying here waiting for Darius to finish killing my people,” the alpha says before turning his back on him.

“Your people aren’t going anywhere.”

Casius takes a couple of steps forward.

“Darius needs us, and you’re going to obey.”

Tanner lets out a short, humorless laugh.

“He needs us? He’s been promising us the fall of the kingdom of Lemuria for more than a year, and you’re all still sleeping in the rain, counting the scraps of food left in the pots.”

Casius’s smile disappears.

“Watch what you say.”

“Why? Are you going to kill me? Do it. At least then my people will know exactly who decided to destroy them.”

Casius lets out a growl and shifts.

His bones crack beneath his skin. The muscles in his arms tense, and his eyes turn golden as he advances with his fangs bared.

“I gave you a chance.”

Tanner slowly removes his soaked coat and lets it fall into the mud.

“No. You gave me a reason to keep you alive until now.”

Casius lunges at him.

Tanner doesn’t back down.

The impact sends both of them crashing into the muddy ground. Casius tries to sink his fangs into his neck, but Tanner twists his body, blocks his jaw with his forearm, and drives his elbow into his ribs. The sharp crack of a bone cuts through the noise of the storm.

Casius growls and retaliates with a swipe that catches Tanner in the side. His claws tear through the fabric and open four deep wounds that immediately begin to bleed.

Tanner looks at the blood running down his abdomen.

Then he looks back at Casius.

And smiles.

“Is that all?”

Casius attacks again. This time, Tanner is waiting for him.

He moves aside at the last second, grabs Casius by the arm, and uses the momentum of his own body to hurl him against one of the trees. Casius’s back slams into the trunk with such force that the bark tears away.

Before he can recover, Tanner is already on top of him. He hits him once, then again, and again, unleashing all the strength he has built up through months of hunger, rage, and frustration. Each blow makes Casius’s head jerk violently against the trunk, and blood begins mixing with the rain running down his face.

Casius tries to shield himself, but Tanner knocks his arms aside and strikes him again, giving him no time to catch his breath or find an opening to counterattack. The sharp sound of each impact mixes with their growls
