I cling to the body of the love of my life as if my life depended on it. My arms wrap tightly around him, and I let him squeeze me because this is the only place I want to be. With him, in our room, far away from everything that happened while we were separated. I imagined this moment for months, and now that he is finally standing in front of me, I can hardly believe he is really home.

His arms slowly release me, and he takes a step back. His hands find my belly, and he drops to his knees in front of me. His eyes shine with that intense golden color I missed so much and imagined seeing again countless times. For several seconds, he says nothing. He simply looks at me, as if he still needs to convince himself that I am here.

“I have never been so afraid of losing you as I was today, when I woke up and you were lying in this same bed, covered in blood and dirt. For me, only one day has passed. They told me you had been missing for more than a year, and when you return, you not only brought joy back to every person in this castle, you also made me happy by giving me the immense gift of becoming a father.”

“I don’t know what happened, but I’m fine now.”

My hands caress his hair, now much longer than it was before. My fingers slide through the strands while he keeps his hands on my belly, as if he still cannot believe our child is there. He lowers his head and runs his nose along the skin covering my belly, breathing deeply, and a small smile appears on my face as I watch him so focused on feeling our baby.

“I was going to tell you that night, but…”

Bastian interrupts me before I can finish.

“I know. There is an army under the roof of this castle, there is barely enough room for all of them, and they have told me everything you had to go through. I’m sorry. That witch…”

“But I’m here now. It took me a little while, but I managed to come home, to you.”

I don’t want to talk about Johan. I don’t want him to find out about Legion either, at least not yet. There are things I still am not ready to tell him, and for once, I don’t want to think about everything that happened far from here. I want it to be just him and me, enjoying this little moment of peace before everything turns upside down again. Because that is how it has always been since I arrived at this castle. Peace never lasts very long, and after everything that has happened, I just want to enjoy these few minutes when I don’t have to fight, run, or worry about who is going to try to kill me next.

“I made some friends in the human world. I was in another world, I met kind people who were willing to help without asking for anything in return.”

Bastian remains kneeling in front of me. His hands stay on my belly as he looks up to listen to me, although he soon returns his attention to it. He runs his nose and lips over my skin with a tenderness that undoes me and murmurs a few words I cannot make out. His warm breath tickles my skin, and my fingers disappear into his hair again.

“I met them.”

His voice sounds calmer than before.

“I was surprised to see vampires, witches, a demon, a fairy… hybrids, two kings.”

I let out a quiet laugh as I remember the number of creatures that have crossed paths with me. If someone had told me when I arrived in Lemuria that I would end up surrounded by vampires, demons, witches, and kings from other worlds, I probably would have thought they were completely insane. Now, after everything I have been through, it seems almost normal.

I am exhausted. My entire body is begging me to rest, and for the first time in a long time, all I want is to get back into our bed and sleep in his arms. I want to feel his warmth, hear his breathing, and wake up knowing he is still there. Just as I am about to suggest it, I feel his entire body tense.

His hands remain motionless on my belly.

Bastian slowly lifts his head.

I look down as well.

Our son just kicked him in the nose.

For a second, neither of us reacts. Bastian stares wide-eyed, completely bewildered, as he brings one hand to his nose as if he needs to make sure it really just happened.

And then I cannot hold it in.

The laughter escapes before I can stop it. I cover my mouth with one hand, but it is useless. The harder I try to control myself, the more I laugh when I see Bastian’s expression. He looks at my belly with a mixture of disbelief and offense, as if our son has just formally challenged him before he has even been born.

“Did he just kick me?”

The question makes me laugh again.

Bastian narrows his eyes and looks at my belly once more. For a moment, he seems to be seriously considering what kind of creature he has managed to put against him before it is even born.

“I don’t think he likes you.”

My comment only makes him look at me with an expression of absolute indignation.

And I laugh again.

After months of fear, blood, pain, and darkness, this little absurd moment feels perfect. Our son just kicked his father in the nose, and for the first time since all of this began, I can laugh without thinking about what will come next.

He shakes his head and turns his attention back to my belly. His hands gently caress my skin, tracing the curve I can no longer hide beneath any clothing, while he narrows his eyes as if he is trying to have a serious conversation with someone who has not even been born yet.
