Chapter 179
“These swords are your weapons, my gifts.”

Erik takes one and then the other. The moment his hands close around the hilts, a current of energy runs through his body, and the blades respond as if they recognize his blood.
“Helel,” Selene says, pointing to the first. “Erebus,” she adds, looking at the second. “They were not forged by any blacksmith. They do not belong to this world. Their power will survive as long as the blood that claims them continues to exist.”
Erik lowers his gaze to the swords.
“What am I supposed to do with them?”
Selene looks at him in silence.
“Survive.”
The goddess begins to fade into the moonlight.
“Wait! Will I see you again?”
“When the time comes.”
Selene disappears, and Erik is left alone. Then a rain of stars crosses the sky. His brothers fall behind him, wounded and dying, but Erik finds them and helps them to their feet. Something has changed in him. His former white wings darken until they become black, and one after another, his brothers end up kneeling before him.
The vision changes again.
Legion begins traveling through the Hidden Lands with the two swords at his back. I see him cross forests, mountains, and territories dominated by creatures that kill one another. He faces monsters that would make even the most powerful warriors of Lemuria retreat. For years, for decades, for centuries, his name becomes something no one dares to utter.
Until he reaches the frozen lands of the north. There, he finds the first wolves. They are enormous, wild, much larger than any lycanthrope I have ever seen. They are fighting among themselves, and blood covers the snow. Erik intervenes. He does not exterminate them. He forces them to stop and puts an end to a war that seemed to have no way out. Then she appears, the she-wolf who will change his existence. I watch her slowly approach. She is not afraid of him. She does not kneel or run away. She looks directly into his eyes, and for the first time since the vision began, Erik smiles.
The scene changes, and I see them together. Then I see children, entire generations, and, with the passage of time, the first Dire Wolves.
The demon’s blood mixed with that woman’s creates something that has never existed before. They are enormous, powerful, and capable of doing things no other bloodline can equal. I see them become kings. I see them rule territories. I see them maintain the balance between creatures that had lived at war for centuries.

Then I see the she-wolf die. Erik holds her body in his arms, and that image hits me with a force I did not expect. He cries in silence, like a man who has just lost the only person who ever managed to make him feel that he belonged somewhere. The two swords pass into the hands of his children, and Erik disappears.
Then the downfall begins.
The children turn against one another. First there are arguments, then murders, and finally wars that end up destroying what their parents had built.
I see brothers killing brothers, parents killing children, and kings falling as the survivors flee lands they can no longer call home.
The blood begins mixing with other races, generation after generation, until the bloodline is diluted and the two swords disappear. The vision darkens, and for a moment, I think it is over, but then a forest appears again.
Lemuria.
A Dire Wolf man walks among the trees. He is not searching for just anything. He is looking for something he cannot find.
Instead, he finds a woman.
The story continues, and I see them together. I see their children being born, and then I see the man leave. The vision moves forward again, generation after generation, until Celine appears.
My breath catches when I see her standing in front of a sword.
Erebus.
The blade awakens in her hands.
Then another woman appears, Valeria, holding Helel, the sword that once belonged to the other branch of the bloodline.
Finally, both blades appear together in Celine’s hands.
The entire world trembles.
It is not a battle.
It is a rupture.
She destroys everything.
The sky splits open, the seas rise, the mountains break apart, and entire cities disappear. There is no distinction between humans and supernatural beings. There are no allies or enemies.
Only destruction.
“That is the destiny coming for her.”

The vision disappears, and the pavement returns beneath my hands. I am on my knees in the middle of the street, breathing with difficulty as mud sticks to my fingers and my chest rises and falls violently. My throat is dry, and a cold sweat runs down my back.
Erik remains standing in front of me, motionless, watching me with absolute seriousness. There is no smile on his face.
“Do you understand now why she cannot go to the human world?”
I slowly raise my head.
“She does not want to destroy it.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Erik watches me for several seconds.
“Because she still does not know what she carries inside her.”
I swallow and look at my hands. I can still feel the trembling in my fingers. Then I think of Celine, the woman
I love who does not even know what she carries in her blood. She does not know that a destiny capable of destroying everything is waiting for her.
“What do you want me to do?”
Erik takes a step closer.
“I want you to keep her here.”
I grit my teeth.
“Bastian will not let me get near her.”
“Then find a way.”
I lower my gaze. I know she could choose to leave.
“She could decide to leave.”
“Then make sure she knows the truth before she makes that decision.”
I look at him in silence.
And something inside me finally falls into place.
I do not know how I will do it, but I am going to keep her here, in her world. Even if I have to face everyone who stands in my way to accomplish it.
The fear is still there. It does not disappear. It probably never will after seeing that.

But beneath the fear, something else emerges.
Determination.

I will not let Celine destroy the world. I will not allow anyone to turn her into a weapon. And I will not abandon her.
If keeping her safe means facing the prince, his men, the Order, or even the forces I just watched descend upon the world, I will do it.
I get to my feet.
This time, my legs are not shaking.
“She will not go to the human world.”
Erik holds my gaze.
“That is exactly what I needed to hear.”
