Chapter 56

“Are you serious?” Bastian watches me from the other side of the open door. Cold air pours into the vehicle while he remains standing there, one hand resting on the roof of the truck and the other extended toward me. His black eyes narrow slightly. and a crease appears between his brows.

“Very serious.” I reply without moving from my seat.

His jaw tightens.

“Celine…”

“Jack was doing his job,” I scold him.

The silence that follows is quite interesting.

Bastian slowly turns his head toward the head of security.

Jack remains motionless beside the open door. He is a large man, nearly as broad-shouldered as some of the kingdom’s elite warriors. The rain has darkened parts of his black uniform, and several droplets still slide down his short hair. Even so, the most admirable thing is that he manages to maintain a professional expression while his prince stares at him as though he has just committed a crime.

“He was touching my woman,” Bastian argues as if that were a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Jack doesn’t even blink.

“I was helping your woman, Your Highness.”

The muscle in Bastian’s jaw jumps again.

“She didn’t need your help.”

I watch them in silence.

Now I understand that they don’t just work together.

They’re friends too.

Otherwise, Jack would never answer him like that.

“If you were unbearable before, you’re even worse now. I was only opening the door for our Luna. I wasn’t trying to kidnap

her.

A strange noise comes from the driver’s seat.

Alaric has just choked trying to suppress a laugh.

Aymara, far less discreet, covers her mouth with one hand while her shoulders shake.

“Stay out of it,” Bastian growls without taking his eyes off Jack.

“I’m trying to,” Alaric replies from the front. “But this is probably the stupidest argument I’ve seen all week.”

“And that’s saying something considering we live with you,” Aymara adds.

The laugh that escapes Jack lasts only a second, but it is enough for all of us to hear it.

The head of security seems to realize his mistake almost immediately because he regains his composure with admiralite speed, although it is already too late.

Bastian slowly turns his head toward him.

My mate’s expression changes very little, only a slight movement of his brows and a steadier stare than usual, but after spending enough time around him, I have learned to recognize when he is annoyed and when he is simply deciding how he plans to get revenge.

“I wasn’t laughing at you, Your Highness,” Jack clarifies with award-worthy seriousness.

“Of course you weren’t,” Bastian replies.

“I would never do such a thing.”

“Jack.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

The two stare at each other for several seconds.

It is painfully obvious that neither of them believes a word the other is saying.

I have to bite the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing.

“You just said you were going to help me yourself,” I remind Bastian before he finds a way to change the subject.

My mate opens his mouth with every intention of responding. I can practically see him preparing an argument in his head, trying to find some way to win the discussion, but after a few seconds he closes it again and ends up looking at me with an expression of complete betrayal.

I think he has just realized he lost.

I smile sweetly at him.

Around us, cold winter air continues slipping through the open truck door. Alaric is no longer making the slightest effort to hide his amusement, and Aymara has fully turned around in her seat to watch the entire spectacle. Even Jack appears to be fighting another smile.

Yes, it sounds like a whim.

But in reality, I’m training my beast.

Or my mate.

It’s practically the same thing.

Bastian keeps staring at me somewhere between surprised and offended. His eyebrows rise slightly, and he seems to be internally debating whether to argue with me or surrender.

I don’t particularly care which option he chooses.

“Could you apologize to our friend so our Luna can get out of the vehicle?” Alaric complains from the front seat, resting an arm on the steering wheel as he turns around to enjoy the show.

“Yes, I’m running late for my date, Your Highness,” Aymara adds with admirable patience.

“Although I can wait a little longer, Bastian. Teach Jack a lesson. He’s clearly crossed a line. Take all the time you want. We’re in no hurry to leave.”

The Beta receives a hard punch in the arm from his sister.

Alaric doesn’t even flinch.

“What? I’m trying to support our friend.”

“You’re an idiot.”

“An idiot deeply committed to the cause.”

I simply keep waiting.

Bastian does too.

As for Jack, he appears to be reconsidering several life choices.

His gaze flickers rapidly between me, the prince, and the Victorius siblings. Judging by the absolute confusion crossing his face. I suspect he never expected to find himself trapped in the middle of a couple’s argument before dinner.

My mate rolls his eyes after several seconds and finally turns his head toward him.

“I’m sorry, Jack.”

The apology is not entirely sincere.

In fact, it sounds more like a reprimand than an apology.

“Do better.” I narrow my eyes.

A resigned silence settles inside the vehicle.

Bastian takes a deep breath.

His shoulders, previously tense, finally relax.

I’m sorry, Jack. My future wife scolds me every time I act like a fool around other people.”

The surprise that appears on the head of security’s face is almost comical.

And finally, a smile begins to curl one corner of his mouth.

“That’s new,” he admits with obvious amusement. “Apology accepted, Your Highness.”

“Don’t get used to it, Bastian growls.
