Chapter 64
My mate is territorial, dominant, and distrustful.
If Thomas is here, it’s because he trusts him.
Besides having investigated every member of his family tree to make sure, of course.
I notice Bastian’s gaze shift to Jack, who until now has been quietly eating in silence.
“I’d love to hear the story behind turning down an offer that any elite warrior would kill to receive. Can you tell us why you rejected the alpha’s offer, Beta Thomas?”
My gaze moves from one to the other until Thomas fixes his eyes on my mate’s friend.
“My family died, I never found my destined mate in my pack, and I had no reason to stay there.”
“So you came here hoping to find your destined mate?”
The question is asked in a soft, casual tone, but I can clearly sense the intention behind it. Jack is testing him, probing him. as though trying to uncover something he still hasn’t said. However, Thomas remains completely calm, without changing his expression for even a second.
“I came here because the prince offered me a privileged position and a job that any warrior would consider the greatest honor. Taking care of our future queen. No responsibility as a pack beta compares to protecting the most important she- wolf on the continent, in the kingdom, or in any pack, Mr. Jackson. And as for my destined mate, if she is here, it wouldn’t change anything, because I will continue doing my job protecting our Luna and future queen.”
There is no ill intent or irritation in Thomas’s voice. He simply answers using the same tone as Jack, with precise, firm words as cold as the gray of his eyes.
I decide to intervene and avoid making dinner even more uncomfortable for Thomas. It’s his first time here, and I understand perfectly the intention behind all these questions from Jack and Bastian.
“Let’s eat and leave the questions for later. Work-related matters can be discussed without any problem, but I don’t think Thomas’s personal life is something any of us should concern ourselves with
Bastian lets out a low chuckle, and Jack makes a carefree gesture before picking up his utensils again.
“Thank you, Luna Celine,” he says seriously.
The conversation continues without any problems after that. Between superficial comments, stories about the castle, and explanations regarding the responsibilities he will assume from now on, the tension gradually disappears from the table. Bastian and Jack end up explaining in greater detail my activities inside and outside the castle, my usual schedule, and some of the places I frequent.
However, my treacherous mind stops paying attention long before that.
While they talk, I return to our bedroom. To the small argument we had. To the shower. To the moment when our wolves took control of our bodies and abandoned any attempt at restraint.
While they talk, I return to our bedroom, to the small argument we had, to the shower, and to the moment when our wolves took control of our bodies, casting aside any attempt at restraint. To the kiss, the caresses, and the almost desperate need we both felt at that moment. Heat slowly rises along my neck, and I’m grateful that no one seems to be paying attention to me.
My wolf, Astra, is growing stronger inside me. I can feel it more clearly every day. Sometimes I sense her emotions, her

impulses, or little flashes of thoughts that disappear as quickly as they arrive. Other times, she remains completely silent for hours.
She appears and disappears whenever she wishes, leaving me with thousands of questions piling up inside my head and no answers about what is really happening to me.
But suddenly my lips remember Bastian’s lips, my body longs for his hands, and a wave of heat begins to spread through me in a way that is both familiar and unexpected. The sensation is so intense that it steals my breath for a moment. I look up and find my mate’s golden eyes fixed on ine. My heart skips a beat.
No. It can’t be.
I stand so quickly that the chair scrapes against the marble floor with a harsh screech that causes the entire table to fall silent. Three pairs of eyes immediately turn toward me, and I can barely mutter an apology before leaving the dining room. I hurry up the stairs while my heart pounds violently against my ribs. Every step makes it worse. My clothes are in the way, my skin burns, and it feels as though a fire has just been lit beneath my flesh.
It can’t be.
There’s still a month left.
A whole damn month.
Breathing heavily and with my skin on fire, I enter our bedroom and strip off my clothes along the way, leaving them scattered across the floor without caring where they land. My hands tremble as I cross the room and enter the bathroom. I need to cool down my body, I need to think, and I need to prepare myself mentally for what is coming.
Pain.
The memory of my first heat immediately comes rushing back.
The endless hours, the feeling that my body was breaking apart from the inside, the exhaustion, and the desperation.
I turn on the shower and step beneath the cold water without even waiting for the temperature to change. The shock against my skin draws a shaky breath from me, and every muscle in my body tenses violently.
I sink down onto the cold tiles, clenching my hands into fists as I struggle to control my breathing.
Then the first stab of pain comes.
A deep, sudden pain that cuts through the center of my body.
I grit my teeth as another wave follows.
And then another.
I don’t know exactly how much time passes.

Minutes, or perhaps hours.
The water continues to pour over my head while I fight to remain silent.
I don’t want to worry anyone.
And least of all him.
When the bathroom door suddenly swings open, my stomach tightens as I recognize those heavy footsteps immediately.
Bastian.
