Chapter 84

Silas turned the pages of the old book carefully, although it was obvious he was barely paying attention to the words. He seemed to know the story by heart.
“Over time, they learned to live with the nature of their females, and those who couldn’t accept it simply left their mates through a formal rejection.”
He closed the book with a sharp sound and placed it on the small wooden table.
“How exactly were a demon and a she-wolf able to have children? That’s… unnatural.”
Bastian’s grandfather crossed his legs once more and rested his arms on the armrests with the same calm composure as always. A faint smile appeared on his face.
“The Goddess has some rather strange moments, but it’s not that far-fetched. Hybrids of all kinds exist. Fairies and demons, witches and vampires, wolves and vampires. Nature is wise, Celine. Anyway, to finish the story, Legion remained with the pack until his wife died hundreds of years later. The hybrid race they created became known as the Dire Wolves, and to this day. I have only ever met one.”
“Does that mean you’ve seen someone like me? A Wolfsangel?”
“No. I’ve only met you. You’re still a pup, and I’d wager you haven’t been able to shift into your wolf form yet, have you?”
Bastian had said it.
His grandfather had seen many things and was the only one who might actually be able to give us an answer.
“I can feel my wolf. Her name is Astra, and the first changes in my appearance began after she awakened. But I still haven’t shifted.”
“According to this book, Dire Wolves only manage to take on their animal form at around twenty-five years of age. The process can happen sooner when they find their destined mates and are marked. Is that what happened to you?”
“Yes. But my eyes, my hair, the tattoos…”
“Do you have a Z-shaped symbol on your back? Did your parents live in the human world?”
And that’s when my thoughts become a complete mess.
Because my parents are from Lemuria.
My entire bloodline is from Lemuria, except…
“All my relatives, except for my maternal grandfather, are from Lemuria. And yes, I have that mark.”
“Interesting.” He absently scratches his barely grown beard. “And do you know where your grandfather was from? Because it’s quite obvious that he was a Wolfsangel and that several generations later that bloodline ended up manifesting in you. The real question is: How did he end up in Lemuria?”
“I have no idea, Mr. Silas. The only thing I know from my grandmother is that one day she woke up and he was gone. My mother and my uncle Christian were only three years old. She raised them by herself.”
The old man frowned slightly.
Three years. A foreigner appears out of nowhere, forms a bond. has children, and then disappears. It makes no sense. Wolves, regardless of our race, would never leave our mates behind, much less our children.”

i still remember my grandmother crying while holding that photograph in her hands when she thought no one was watching.
“Or perhaps he was looking for something, sweetheart.”
“What do you mean?”
Silas reached for the book again.
“After Legion’s wife died, the angel no longer found a reason to continue living among his people. He decided to drive his own swords through his heart in order to reunite with her in the afterlife. The pack ended up dividing, and his two sons inherited one sword each. But power tends to make people stupid. The two eventually turned against each other and died during that war. After that, the swords disappeared.”
His gaze moved toward Erebus.
“That is one of them. Erebus, Legion’s sword. And her sister remains lost.”
“Mr. Silas, if my grandfather was searching for this sword… what would he want it for?”
“I don’t know. But if your grandfather was truly just passing through and remained for three years before disappearing without a trace, perhaps it was because he didn’t find what he was looking for and continued on his journey. Your grandmother was not his mate, and his children were not important to him.”
The pieces begin falling into place inside my head.
Too many pieces.
“When I saw the sword, she called to me. And when I held her for the first time, she showed me hundreds of images. I saw an angel with black wings wielding two identical swords. I saw mountains of corpses, battlefields, and rivers of blood.”
Silas remained silent for several seconds before answering.
“She recognizes you.”
“What?”
“Erebus recognizes one of her master’s daughters, Celine.”
A shiver runs down my spine. The fire continues crackling in the fireplace, and for a moment, the room seems to fall completely silent.
Then I hear it again.
That whisper.
The same distant voice that has followed me ever since I first took the sword into my hands.
Soft.
Melancholic.
And this time, I would swear she speaks a name that I can finally understand.
“Idunn. That’s the name she’s repeating over and over.”
Silas hands me the book with the marked pages.

There it is.

The story exactly as he told it from the beginning, the drawings of both swords, the mark on my back that turns out to be hereditary, and finally, the location of the ancient pack.
Norway.
The Wolfsangel pack had been in Norway.
“Mr. Thorn, when I went to the hospital, they found an anomaly in my blood. They said it was strange and that they had never seen anything like it. Does that mean my blood is different because of the Wolfsangel bloodline?”
The man stands and extends a hand to help me up.
“Call me Grandfather or simply Silas. Drop the mister. We’re family now, Celine. And to answer your question, yes. Your blood is different from that of any wolf in Lemuria. Lycans and ordinary wolves do not possess Dire Wolf blood. There has never been a living one available to study. So don’t let them turn you into a laboratory mouse. Your changes are the result of your bloodline and the mark that awakened when Erebus chose you. The sword recognizes your blood, nothing more. There is no mystery. You’re a perfectly healthy little she-wolf who is only just beginning to live.”
I don’t know why, but hearing those words makes part of the tension I’ve been carrying for weeks finally leave my shoulders
We head toward the door, and I take the book with me so I can study it thoroughly.
