Seventeen
Dawn broke over the Velkorin mountains, the sky painted in pale pink and gold.
I woke before Talia arrived, my body stiff and My muscles ached but I forced myself to move. Today was the first trial. There was no turning back.
By the time I reached the training grounds, the council wolves and several pack members had already gathered. The air smelled of damp stone, sweat, and pine. My stomach twisted nervously. I had never fought anyone like this before… especially not pack warriors.
Maren was already there, arms crossed, smirking like she owned the world.
I hate her guts.
Kaelen was at the edge of the field, standing tall, golden eyes scanning everyone. His presence pressed down on me, making it hard to breathe, but it also… gave me a strange sense of focus I couldn’t let him think of me as weak.
“Sylvara,” a deep voice called. It was one of the council members, a tall Gamma named Tharic. His muscles were thick under his training tunic, his eyes sharp and cold. “Your first trial is simple. Fight. Defeat one of us.. zor all.. and prove you have the strength to survive in Velkorin.”
I blinked. “Fight…? You mean… a fight you?” My voice was shaky.
“Don’t waste strength, little omega,” Maren said, sneering. “You’ll need every second to stay on your feet.”
I swallowed hard and took a deep breath. My hands shook slightly, how I’m I expected to fight a Gamma six times bigger than me but I clenched them into fists. I had to at least try.
Tharic stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. “Ill go easy at first,” he said mockingly. ” Wouldn’t want to hurt the fragile little omega.”
I felt my teeth grit. I hated him already.
Kaelen’s voice rang out then, calm but cold. “Enough talk. Begin.”
The first moment I charged forward, I realized how fast Tharic was. His arm shot out like lightning, aiming for my chest. I ducked instinctively, rolling to the side. The dirt scraped my palms, stinging, but I got to my feet fast.
“Not bad,” Tharic said, smirking. “You move like you you how to use your claws… or maybe you’re just lucky.”
I felt a spark of determination. “You talk way too much,” I said through gritted teeth. “Are you going to fight or keep talking.”
The second attack came faster. I barely blocked his swing, my arms shaking. I felt him push me backward, my foot slipping in the dirt. My heart pounded in my chest.

Kaelen’s golden eyes never left me. I could feel his gaze like fire on my skin, but instead of panicking, I found it… grounding. His presence reminded me why I had to survive.
I pivoted, dodging Tharic again, this time moving toward the smaller male warrior beside him. His name was Kalenor, another Gamma, wiry but quick. He lunged at me with a punch, and I barely blocked it, feeling the sting in my arm.
“You’ll have to do better than that,” I muttered, fury heating me from the inside out.
Tharic laughed, circling me. “She’s stubborn. I’ll give her that.”
I dropped my stance slightly, lowering my center of gravity. My muscles screamed in protest, but I forced them to respond. I had trained with Kaelen yesterday. I remembered every push, every hit, every technique he had drilled into me
I feinted left, and Kalenor lunged. I sidestepped and swept his legs from under him. He fell hard, scrambling to get up, groaning in surprise.
The crowd murmured. Even some of the more judgmental wolves shifted in interest.
“Not bad, little omega,” Tharic said, narrowing his eyes. “But the fight isn’t over.”
He lunged again, this time swinging both fists. I barely blocked, staggering backward. My side throbbed where I had been bruised, but I didn’t give up. I wouldn’t.
Kaelen’s sharp voice echoed in my mind like a command. “Don’t let them break you. Fight.”
I forced my legs to move, ducked under Tharic’s swing, and delivered a solid push to his chest. He stumbled back.
“You’re stronger than you look,” he admitted, gritting his teeth. “But not enough yet.”
I wiped sweat from my brow, heart hammering, muscles screaming, and glared at him. “I’m just getting started!”
The fight continued, back and forth. Tharic’s strikes were fast, Kalenor was relentless, and my own body ached from the effort. My muscles burned, sweat dripped into my eyes, and my lungs screamed for air. But I kept moving. I kept dodging. I kept striking.
A part of me was terrified, but another part… exhilarated. This was the first time I had truly tested myself against someone my size, my strength. And every time I landed a hit, even a small one, it felt like a victory.
Kaelen watched silently from the edge, arms crossed, eyes burning with intensity. He didn’t interfere. Not yet. His presence alone was enough to make me push harder, move faster, fight
smarter.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I managed a solid strike on Tharic’s chest, staggering him backward. Kalenor lunged at me again, but I sidestepped, tripped him with a quick sweep of my leg, and he fell hard.

The council wolves muttered among themselves could see Maren’s face twitch, surprised and irritated.
Tharic straightened, chest heaving, and held up his hand. “Enough.”
I froze, panting, legs trembling. My robe was damp with sweat, dirt smeared across my arms, hair plastered to my face. I couldn’t believe it…I had actually… held my own.
Kaelen stepped forward, golden eyes fixed on me. He didn’t smile, didn’t say anything yet. But the way he looked at me… it was like fire and ice all at once. Dangerous. Powerful. And… almost approving.
“You survived,” he said finally, his deep voice carrying across the field. “You’re stronger than I expected. Weakness will not be tolerated in Velkorin. Remember that.”
“Yes, Alpha,” I gasped, barely holding myself upright.
Maren’s face was a storm. “This is only the beginning,” she snapped. “You will not survive the next trial so easily, little omega.’
I didn’t answer her. I didn’t need to. I had proven…if I could hold my ground t. Then I wasn’t as weak as she thought.
And as Kaelen’s gaze lingered on me a moment longer before he turned away, I felt a spark of something I hadn’t expected: confidence.
The first trial was over.
But the rest… the real test… had just begun.
The third trial, Trial of lust … with Kaelen
I’m doomed!
