I stayed inside the car for a few seconds, watching the chaos move away from me. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car quietly while everyone was distracted. I looked up again. Millie had reached the middle of the street and had suddenly stopped. Her body was stiff.

I frowned. “Millie?” I called.

Suddenly, a speeding car came from the side. And before I knew, it slammed into her. Millie’s body flew and landed hard. Everything happened in seconds, and then she was on the ground. I reached her, shaking all over, and fell to my knees beside her.

There was so much blood. Her wig was half off, and her hair underneath was visible. Her sunglasses were cracked. Her eyes were half open, not focusing on anything.

“No,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “No, no, no.”

I touched her shoulder. My hands were shaking so badly that I could barely hold her. “Help!” I cried out. “Someone call an ambulance!”

I don’t even remember how I did it, but somehow, I got her into the car. I held her against my chest, pressing her head to me like I could keep her alive just by holding her close. My dress and arms became soaked with blood. I kept talking to her, even though she wasn’t answering.

“Millie, please,” I whispered. “Please stay with me. Please.”

When we got to the hospital, doctors rushed out. They took her from my arms and ran inside. I followed,

Not long after, Julie arrived, breathless and pale. She pushed through the crowd, her eyes wide as she looked around. When she finally went into the room to see Millie’s body, she broke crying uncontrollably.

I walked inside cursing myself, feeling responsible for Millie’s death.

Julie stepped back suddenly and sniffed the air. “Wait,” she said, voice tense.

Scott looked at her. “What?”

Julie sniffed again, slowly, carefully, like she was checking something she didn’t want to find.

“There is a smell on her,” she said. Her eyes were wide now. “Magic,” she said quietly.

I stared at her, confused.

Scott’s face went hard. He sniffed. “It’s a sharp smell… coppery…”

Troy lifted his head slightly, blinking through tears.
