Jacqueline was sitting in the ski lodge lounge, next to a giant
Christmas tree, sipping a glass of red wine contemplating
how much her life had changed in only a few short weeks.
They were having a small gathering in the lounge of the magical beings of the town to celebrate the holiday while most of the town were in their own homes with their families.
River was leaning against the bar dressed in a pretty red dress which hugged her figure and Wraith was behind her with his eyes fixed on her ass and River had smacked his hands more than once. Jacqueline couldn’t say a word about it though because her own three mates were not much better considering they’d barely let her out of the house once they saw the black minidress she was wearing.
Her eyes swiveled to the entrance of the lounge, and she waved happily at Aspen and Jack who were entering. Aspen beelined towards her, shooting an annoyed glance at Jack as she left him in her wake.
Flinging herself down in the chair next to Jaqueline, Aspen groaned, “the man is ridiculous.”
“What did my overprotective big brother do now?”
‘Told his parents they weren’t welcome to the baby shower
my mother wants to throw me and I hate being in the middle of the conflict. It makes my skin crawl.”
“What?”
“Jac,” Aspen looked of her with exasperation, it is not for
another six months. His mother sat down at the breakfast
table this morning and asked if my mother had mentioned if there was anything she might need for the baby shower and offered the use of a ballroom at the palace and Jack looked her right in the face and said there is no need for your involvement since you won’t be there.”
“Shit.”
“Shit.” Aspen agreed.
“What did King Jack say?”
“Nothing. He said nothing. He did however, crumble and entire biscuit in his hand after he froze it solid. He then got up and walked out without looking back and Winika chased after him.”
“Why? Why would Jack say that?”
“He says he is setting firm boundaries about what is acceptable to him as a father. Until Winika will agree to counselling, which she continues to insist she doesn’t need, Jack is sticking to his guns about her involvement in the life of our child.”
Jacqueline shrugged, “I get that. Jack told me he is very worried about her mental state and that until she gets the help he believes she needs he’s not backing down on his insistence she’s not fit to be around a child. King Jack said he refuses to admit her without her permission, but Winika is adamant she is not sick.”
“The high priestess said he has spent a lot of time in the temple asking for guidance on Winika from the Queen Mother. When he’s not performing his duties as the king, he’s in the temple.” Jacqueline sighed. “He calls me every day to tell me he loves me and that he is not asking anything of me, only that he wants me to know I am loved. Most of the calls are under five minutes and succinct.” 3/12
“His consort is a woman?”
“A gorgeous six–foot–tall blonde bear shifter who is bloody brilliant and incredibly sexy.” Bar laughed, “at least according to Dana’s description. She was not happy to find out they work very long hours together and into the late nights, early morning.”
“Bar, did you make it worse?” Aspen giggled at his naughty smile. “Terrible.”
“She’s jealous?” Jacqueline blinked in confusion. “She has to know he won’t cheat, right?”
“Incredibly jealous.” Bar laughed. “I admit I really love watching my big brother floundering. He’s so out of his element. All he wants is to keep her happy but he’s dealing with a woman who has been cheated on before more than once and has serious trust issues. It’s a thing of beauty.”
“You need to stop enjoying his misery,” Jacqueline shook her head at his antics.
“It’s just so fun.” Bar ducked away from her playful slap.
he said? He’s coming with me if I do.”
River snickered, “he mentioned that when I was over there. He’s fairly sure he has his father on his side. Every time Winika denies needing help, King Jack is in the temple begging for patience and guidance. Jack thinks he’s
Aspen looked at Jacqueline with an “I told you so expression” on her face.
“Dana?” River asked.
“Bjorn’s main advisor is drop dead gorgeous and they travel alone together all the time, stay up late in his office and
“No way.” River shook his head. “I don’t believe it. He’s a shifter, supernatural.”
“He waited for his mate,” Dana smiled shyly with some pride on her face.
“You get what you need,” Jacqueline smiled at the women.
“Six.” Jacqueline sighed. “They all have bears who all have opinions and wants of their own. Also, two out of three bears are the equivalent of teenage boys. They are young and inexperienced, and they like to push boundaries and are hornier than the three men combined.” Jacqueline shifted. “I woke up this morning to Wilder’s beast Artos in his beast form, in our bed, in the cabin, sniffing my crotch. Creepy thing.”
Hugh entered, and it was clear they’d detoured somewhere by the state of Fawn’s hair. “That’s all of us in the years to come,” she watched Hugh stop Fawn under a mistletoe.
“Here comes someone else with mate problems,” Dana snickered as Tabby entered with her face bright red with rage. “Can I say I have never been more thrilled to see the adage be careful what you wish for in real time? I love how her mate is a fuckwad and she’s reaping the benefits of his prickiness.” She shot a look at the door where the man himself sauntered in with cocky arrogance. “He’s smugger than Bjorn.” 9/12
“I want to punch his face,” Tabby snarled as she dropped right on her backside on the floor at Jacqueline’s feet. “You’re
